Christmas arrived at the Golf last night with our Annual Ladies Section Christmas Party.

A wonderful meal was greatly enjoyed by all and this was followed by a lively Christmas sing song led by Moira and Liz, our Social Convenors.

It was a most enjoyable evening and it was a marvellous way to get everyone in the mood for Christmas.

The final Greenlees match of the season took place on Friday 18th September - a rescheduled game with our friends from Cawdor. We enjoyed a real Indian summer's day - with temperatures in the 70s, wonderful views and perfect playing conditions - and the visitors won 5 1/2 - 3 1/2.

The day was enjoyed by all and was finished off with a celebration / commiseration party at Anne's where we all toasted good health and success for next season.

Party time at Anne's after the match

Tuesday, 8th September 2015

It was 3rd time lucky as we eventually managed to play the much postponed Greenlees match at home today against Bothwell Castle.

With the skies being overcast, it did feel autumnal as the matches teed off at 1pm. However, a glimpse of blue sky could be seen above the 5th fairway and shortly afterwards, the sun came out to play.....much to everyones delight! The murky cloud hung about all afternoon and across the river and so it did a feel a little cool at times, but everyone was just thankful that we managed to get round dry after such a disappointing wet summer.

This was our penultimate Greenlees game of the season, and unfortunately Greenock lost the match.

The final score was Greenock 2.5 - Bothwell Castle 6.5.

Flag Day - Friday 4th September

Update re Flag Day and Professional's Shop

I have written out the cards for everyone and left them with Oliver in the professional's shop - please collect them from him on Friday morning. I have marked everyone's handicap as of today and added the % of strokes received for the Flag Competition - add your strokes received to the par of the course to get the total number of strokes to be used for the purposes of the competition- eg for a 36 handicap - 32 strokes received + 71 = 103 strokes to be used before planting your flag / marker. Please be aware that anyone who increases or cuts their handicap on Thursday in the September Medal and Breakthrough Brooch will need to adjust their handicap and strokes accordingly - if in doubt ask a member of the committee.

Winnings in the Professional's Shop

As you all know, Oliver is taking leave from the end of November until the start of the 2016 season. It has been confirmed by Peter Gallacher that all money must be spent in the shop before Oliver leaves in November. For this reason, I am giving you all notice that you should spend up any money lying in your account - this applies to any sweeps won throughout the year and also for vouchers awarded at our Prizegiving in October. I will email directly all those who have won a trophy / prize with voucher attached - obviously we still have some competitions and finals to be completed- so at the moment this will be a ball park figure until we know all the results.

Thanks, Sandra

With this week being so wet, it was a great relief that we managed to play our scheduled home Greenlees match today against Eastwood. The forecast was for rain in the morning, but no rain fell thankfully and we were good to go for our 1pm tee off.

The course looked in good shape despite the torrential rains of the last week. The main factor today was the wind.....which reached gale force at the highest parts of the course. Black clouds looked threatening, but the strong winds perhaps kept the rain away. There were a few showers, but they didn't last long.

Thankfully the visitors from Eastwood saw the beautiful view from our course and despite the tricky conditions, everyone enjoyed their games.

Greenock won the match with the final score, Greenock 6.5 Eastwood 2.5.

Just reminder that the sheet is up on the Board for this event - the last social event in our fixture list before the Prize giving in October. Nine Lady Captains contested the Captain's Salver at Greenock Golf Club on Tuesday and fortunately the rain stayed away and we were able to enjoy the course without having to wear waterproofs - although the conditions were still very wet underfoot.

The current captain, Sandra Macdougall won this year with a score of 89 - 16 = 73. Jessie McKillop and Margaret Paton then joined all the players for a very enjoyable meal at Fusion to celebrate the annual get together - and a very happy evening was had by all.

Some of you will be aware that we have had to cancel today's Y125 Stableford competition because the course was closed at 1.30pm following two tremendous downpours. I'm sorry for the hardy band of ladies, who completed the round and posted their scores - but as you will have noticed, the holes were full of water early on and the midday rain was enough to cancel the competition ( I took advice from Jim O'Neill, who confirmed it was unplayable.)

Today's scores are for reduction only and the competition will be rescheduled - again!

We have decided to move the August Medal and Thistle Brooch ( scheduled for this Thursday) to Thursday 10th September instead of the Greensome.  This means that the Y125 Stableford will be played this Thursday 13th August. Please note that it is a stableford - and you should play with the partners you had originally prearranged for this date - i.e. there will not be a draw sheet. Anyone who does not have a partner and wants to play should check the timesheet - i would encourage you to take times as soon as possible to help with this process. One of the reasons we want to play this competition sooner rather than later is to identify a winner, who can collect their prize at the Gala Day prize giving his Saturday.

Thanks for your patience - as someone already pointed out - we can't do much about the weather.

Our last away match this season for our Greenlees team was a short trip across the Clyde to Cardross Golf Club.

For once the waterproofs and jumpers were kept in the golf bag, and replaced by cropped trousers and suntan lotion. The course was in great condition and was remarkably dry despite the recent rain.

Home advantage proved decisive and Cardross won the match.

The final result Cardross 9 - Greenock 0.

Riddell Rosebowl Match

Despite Greenock's course being closed because of heavy overnight rain and strong winds, a hardy band of Greenock ladies headed down to Skelmorlie on Tuesday to play the annual match for the Riddell Rosebowl.

The winds and rain eased a little as we headed out onto the course, but the competition was reduced to 13 holes to take account of the very wet conditions underfoot.

The match - as always - was good fun and played in a friendly spirit - and the result was a win for Skelmorlie (2.5 to 0.5)

Linda Breaks the Record!

Linda McDougall winning the Championship for an 18th time

The Ladies Championship was played over Greenock Golf course today in atrocious weather conditions. The rain was so heavy at times that squeegees were required on some greens to disperse the puddles.

Linda McDougall was defending her title - and this year her opponent was Dorothy Fisher, a past champion and regular finalist. The final had a particular edge this year as Linda was going all out to beat the record of 17 championships set by the late Kathleen McNeill, a past president of the Ladies Golf Union and Scottish Ladies Golf Association.

Both players played excellent golf on a day which saw heavy showers and gale force winds test both their skills and their concentration. Linda took control early on and was two up after two holes - but Dorothy played some excellent golf and pulled this back to one at the fourth hole. This was the pattern of the match until the 11th hole when Linda went three up and won the next hole to put pressure on her opponent. Both players halved the 13th in pars but Linda's par at the 14th was enough to secure her an 18th championship, beating Kathleen's previous record set in 1969.

More photos from the day can be seen below.

It was a short drive up to Kilmacolm today for our next Greenlees match.

For once this summer, the sun shone, and the course at Kilmacolm was looking in great condition despite the wet summer. Dark clouds loomed ominously, but the wind got up during the afternoon and perhaps this helped to keep the rain away.

Kilmacolm currently riding high in the league were the winners.

The final result Kilmacolm 8 - Greenock 1.

Y125 Gala Day - Saturday, 12th August

Hello Everyone.

Please see email below AND attachment from George Deveney re the Y125 competition on Saturday 15th August..

Also - please note that following the postponement of yesterday's Flag Competition, the new date is confirmed as Friday 4th September.

Play will take place throughout the day at the usual ballot times - a notice will be posted on the Board nearer the time.

Emal from George Deveney

The timesheet onto which members may append their names will be posted in clubhouse on Monday.
However, if anyone wants to let me know their preferred timeslot then they can just email me. The times will be allocated by the committee but we will respect any wishes. This ballot system will allow myself to spread out the games over the day and I will also ensure that really slow games will not go out back to back. It also lets me put out guys who have a historical regular time, say at 1245 for instance.

Timeslots are from:

0630 - 0800
0800 - 0930
0930 - 1100
1100 - 1230
1230 - 1400
1400 - 1530.

Best regards and tell the ladies they may contact me directly by e mail.

Y125 Competition

The above event will be a four player strokeplay competition, open to teams of Gents, Ladies and Juniors (any combination) who have a handicap of single figures. There can be no more than two juniors in any team.

Times for the day will be by ballot and members must indicate the timeslot in which they wish to play. Times will be available from 0630 to 1530.

Players will receive full handicap and, dependant upon which hole is being played, there will be a certain number of scores to count as the team score.

E.G. There will be 2 net scores to count at hole 1 and there will be 4 net scores to count at hole 16.

As well as this main competition, we have secured 18fourballs at such course as East Renfrewshire, Cardross, Erskine, West Kilbride, Largs and Scotscraig and these will be available at each hole for “Nearest the Pin” or “Nearest the Pin in 2 shots”. A team may only win one of these, so 18 teams will each win a fourball.

At the 13th, there will also be a hole in one prize on offer worth £5000!!!!!

Allied to the golf, our principal sponsor, Archie Jess, has extremely kindly agreed to organize a free barbeque for all players from around mid morning to late afternoon.

Finally, there is also a Scottish themed cabaret in the evening and, at this stage, tickets will be limited to members and partners only. Attendance at this is also free of charge.

Our disappointing summer continued today on what was Ladies Flag Day.

A promising forecast of sun for the afternoon seemed a distant hope as squally rain continuously fell all Friday mornng. The skies did appear lighter as the first tee off time approached, but with the green keeper advising the course was in a very wet and unplayable state, the decision was taken to postpone the Flag Day competition.

The evening meal went ahead as planned, and 24 ladies enjoyed a delicious meal in the Clubhouse. Afterwards the ladies section provided the entertainment with a an impromptu lively sing along and joke telling..........a great night!

Megawatt Trophy 2015

Moira McInnes, Morag Connolly and Sandra Macdougall  played the annual Megawatt Competition over Gourock Golf Club today - on what started out to be a pleasant summer Sunday morning - bright spells and no immediate threat of rain ( although the forecast was predicting heavy thundery rain from midday onwards).

The match format was threesomes stableford with teams from Greenock, Kilmacolm and Gourock competing for the trophy. Unfortunately the forecast proved to be correct and following a cloudburst, it was agreed to curtail the match to 12 holes.

Greenock were the winners by only one point (54points) followed closely by Gourock (53 points) and Kilmacolm (45 points).

Everyone agreed that their matches had been good fun and after the drenching rain enjoyed tucking into the soup, sandwiches - and homemade tablet.

With it being very wet yesterday, the weather forecast was promising ahead of our home Greenlees match today against Haggs Castle.

Sunny skies and warm sunshine was promised for the afternoon. Unfortunately the forecast was slightly out. The much promised sun did not appear till midway through the afternoon. By this time, all the players were soaked as was the course, although the greens held up very well to the wet conditions.

With it being very humid, waterproofs became uncomfortable, so it was a great relief to finally get the waterproofs off.......it even felt like a summer's day towards the end of the afternoon.

The final result was Greenock 2 - Haggs Castle 7.

Golf Update

Hello Everyone.

Two things to draw to your attention. As you know, Greenock Golf Club celebrates its 125th anniversary this year and the gents and ladies sections are both holding competitions to celebrate the occasion (the ladies competition is on Monday 13th July). As part of the celebrations they are offering everyone a free drink at the bar on Saturday 13th June . George Deveney spoke to me today and has extended the invitation for a free drink to all the ladies (please note this only applies on Saturday 13th June).

Flag Day Friday 10th July : Despite the unseasonal weather, Flag Day is rapidly approaching - and I would just like to let you all know that I will be putting up the menu choices and  sign-up sheets on the noticeboard next week. Please sign up and hope that by July we will all be wearing our shorts!

Best wishes,

Our first home Greenlees game of the season was held today with a match against Lanark

Despite it being May, it felt more like March with the the winds freshening during the afternoon making the inward 9 holes a challenge for all. The course looked wonderful with the greens in great shape.

Another large cruise ship was docked at the Greenock Container Terminal, and the Royal Princess looked majestic from the golf course.

The final result Greenock 6 - Lanark 3.

Our second Greenlees match of the season was held today with an away game at East Renfrewshire Golf Club.

Sunny skies interspersed with squally showers made playing difficult. Most challenging were the strong northerly winds sweeping over the course making if feel more like March instead of May.......although in sheltered spots, it day actually feel like May. A hilly and very interesting course made the day most enjoyable despite the unseasonably cold day.

The final score was East Renfrewshire 8 - Greenock 1.

Hello again!

Oliver, our new Professional, has been speaking to me about getting team shirts for the ladies. If we are able to agree (!) on a design/ colour etc, the proposal would be that Oliver can get a discount on clothing from suppliers with the club crest - if we can identify a polo shirt that can be worn for all team matches - Greenlees, Friendly etc.  He needs a minimum of 6 ladies to agree to a style - so we could have more than one shirt if colour schemes are an issue.

Oliver is going to ask Callaway to bring samples of shirts to the club next Tuesday 26th May at 11.00/11.30 to allow us to see the shirts - and more importantly help to identify sizes. This time slot is just before the Greenlees home game against Lanark - so hopefully this should suit many of the team members - but I would also encourage any members who have an interest in getting a ladies club polo shirt to wear for any team match to come along.

Rescheduled Daily Mail 4's

Hello Everyone.

Daily Mail 4s

Following a very wet start this morning, we decided to postpone today's Daily Mail 4s - and this has now been rescheduled for next Monday - 25th May. A new sheet is now up on the noticeboard - hopefully most of the original players will be able to play on the new date - and maybe some new names will also be added to the sheet over the next few days.

Silver Cleek

Taking into account the fact that some ladies had ties fixed for Monday 25th May, we have extended the play-by dates for each round by a week - this should relieve some of the pressure on busy diaries.

Let's hope the weather follows the same pattern as last year - remember - the very wet spring was followed by a wonderful summer!

Best Wishes,

Today we held our first Friendly match of the season, with a home game against Gourock Golf Club.

As the weather was blustery, the match was played over 14 Holes in a Greensome format.

Our first Greenlees match of this season was held today with an away tie at Cowglen Golf Club.

On what was a very pleasant day for golf, the course played long with the recent wet weather making any run hard to find. The skies clouded over during the afternoon, but fortunately the rain stayed away.

The result was Cowglen 6 - Greenock 3.

Course Update

Hello Everyone

Just to let you know that the Captain, Peter Gallacher has confirmed that from now on all competitions days will be counting as we no longer need to use mats and preferred lies can to be used on the fairways. Please note that if there is any change re another prolonged wet spell - check the notice board outside the clubhouse and I will also try to email everyone.

I have also been contacted by a member, who says his 16 year old daughter is interested in giving golf a try. He would like to take her out on the course - but has appealed for any spare clubs / bag so that she can see if she likes it before splashing out on equipment. I have a 5 wood and putter, but wonder if any of you could come up with equipment you would be willing to lend over the summer months. It would be great if we could get another girl interested - and I'm sure Ellie would be delighted to see someone in her own age group.

Hope to hear back from some of you.

Continued Use of Mats on 18 Hole Course

Hello Ladies.

It will come as no surprise to you to learn that the Management Committee have decided to extend the use of mats to cover this very wet spell of weather. The forecast is better for Thursday 2nd April - which is scheduled as a ladies 18 hole stableford - and I'm hoping that this can go ahead for the few hardy souls who intend to play - but please note - we will be playing off mats, so this will NOT be a counting competition.

This year seems to be following last year's pattern - but remember - after a very wet start to the season, we had a wonderful summer - keep your fingers crossed for a repeat performance!

Best Wishes

Hello Everyone

I hope everyone has been encouraged to pick up a golf club over the last week of fine weather - and would like to draw your attention to the new catering arrangements in place for ladies during the week, when there is no "official " caterer on duty. Norma and the bar staff have undergone health and safety training to allow bar staff to make up fresh sandwiches which will be available behind the bar. The only drawback is that you will need to text Norma ( tel 07748 228587) before you go out on the course to give her notice of numbers. Norma is on duty Monday - Thursdays - and the bar doesn't open until 11.00am so hence the need to text her if you tee off before this time - and bear in mind she finishes at 2.00pm so needs to factor any sandwich making into her daily schedule. If you are playing after 11.00am then you can pop in to the bar to see Norma when she is on duty.

I know this is not an ideal situation, but I'm sure you will all agree that this is an big improvement on the shop bought sandwiches of last season - and we are very grateful to Norma for helping us out. Many of you will remember Norma's lunches after our winter ball games on Thursdays a few years ago, when we used the same system and it worked very well.

If anyone has any issues with the above, please contact me directly.

Happy Golfing!

Thursday, 19th March 2015

After the last couple of wet Thursday's, the 2015 season got underway today with a 18 Hole Stableford.

8 Ladies took to the fairways on a very still but dry day.

Early sunshine gave way to cloudier skies in the afternoon and it did get a little cooler in the late afternoon.

The winner was Sandra Macdougall with a wonderful score of 38 points.

Having received a bye in the first round of the Mail on Sunday competition, this morning we headed down the Ayrshire coast to play our second round match at Skelmorlie Golf Club.

After monsoon conditions yesterday, the Skelmorlie course had held up well with the greens in good shape.

Teeing off at 10.30am we had many sharp squally showers throughout the morning, culminating in hailstones in the early afternoon. The wind was strong when we started, but the winds grew stronger as the day went on.

When the matches had finished, the Skelmorlie ladies provided everyone with a delicious afternoon tea. Everyone enjoyed a lovely bowl of minestrone soup along with some lovely sandwiches, scones, shortbread and tablet.

Unfortunately, the result for Greenock was not quite as enjoyable as the catering with Greenock losing the game.

The final score was Skelmorlie 3 - Greenock 2.

Photos from the day can be seen below.

With the March medal not far away, last night we celebrated the start of the golfing season with a Drinks Evening at the Clubhouse.

Around 30 Ladies and guests attended, and it was a great opportunity to meet up with everyone and arrange fixtures before the start of the new season.

Some photos of the evening can be seen below.

Drinks Night on Friday, 6th March at 8pm

Hello Everyone.

The Ladies Section at Greenock Golf Club is holding its annual Drinks Night on Friday 6th March - starting at 8.00pm. The Committee have decided not to issue tickets for this event - so there will be no admission charge - just buy your own drinks at the bar - crisps and nuts will be on the tables.

As usual, we will have the fixture list available for this date ( I will email everyone a copy as soon as it has been approved and there will be copies available on the night) - and it gives everyone the opportunity to get dates in the diaries. We will also be holding a raffle.

I hope you will be able to join us - it is always good to catch up with everyone before the season starts - and it's not so long now till the March Medal - let's hope for some warmer weather!

Best Wishes,

Sandra (Lady Captain)

In June 2014 the Ladies Section held a very successful Open Day.

The raffle held on the day raised a wonderful sum of £350.

This amount was donated to the Rheumatology Department at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Greenock.

In the photo below, our Vice Captain, Morag Connelly can be seen presenting the donation to Profressor Marshall, The Endowment Fund, Rheumatology Department at Inverclyde Royal.
