Hello everyone

The club is hosting an extra competition to celebrate the Ryder Cup - to be held as a shotgun competition on the last day of play - Sunday 28th September.

George Deveney has provided me with details listed below. I have already got a team of ladies (Linda, Mo, Anne T and myself) interested in playing - as you will see it can be a combination of men and ladies - an opportunity to play with your husbands. If anyone is interested can you please make up a four and contact George directly - and note he only has capacity for 14 teams so you'll need to act quickly.

1. Team of 4.
2. £48 per team.
3. Single course meal on completion of round.
4. Shotgun start at 0830 to allow all participants to watch Ryder Cup Singles which start at 1136.
5. We only play over 14 holes.
6. Full handicap allowance.
7. Holes 1 thru 6 it is the 2 best net at every hole added together for team score, holes 7, 8, 13, 14, 15 and 16 we look for the best 3 net scores added together and then at 17 and 18 it is the total of all four scores at each hole, so all in all quite tough format, but interesting.
8. £200 to winning team and some novelty prizes on the day.

Our last Greenlees match of the season was held today with a home match against East Renfrewshire Golf Club.

On a glorious late summer's afternoon, the conditions could not have been better. Views from the course were breathtaking. The greens were fast and the last few days of dry weather gave some run on the course.

It was fitting that the final match of the 2014 season ended in a friendly draw.

Another important social event of the season was held today with our annual Captain v Secretary match.

Due to a very unseasonal gale force wind, the competition was curtailed to 14 holes....much to everyone's relief.

All the participants enjoyed their matches, and in the evening everyone enjoyed a meal at the club.

The Captain's team won this year, but everyone was a winner, with all players receiving lovely gifts from the Captain and Secretary.

Congratulations to Morag Connelly, Vice Captain who shot a hole in one at the 10th hole today.

The amazing shot was witnessed by a group of men on the 11th tee.

Morag was playing in the final of the Bronze Belle against Helen Armstrong.

This was Morag's second hole in one. Back in 1986 Morag had a hole in one at the 3rd hole.

Our penultimate Greenless match of the season was held today, with a home match against Williamwood Golf Club.

With heavy rain the previous evening, the greens were soft and the course was playing longer than before.

Several roe deer were seen roaming the fairways during the afternoon which was delightful to see.

With a freshening breeze, the afternoon was very pleasant for golf.

The result was Greenock 2 - Williamwood 7.

Hello again.

Just a reminder to sign up for the above match - sheets up on the notice board for playing  and for eating! If you are coming to the meal - please tick your menu choices. I need to confirm numbers with the caterer by next Friday - 22nd August. Jessie and I will be doing the draw for teams on Sunday 24th August.

Also - most of you have collected your Scottish Golf Card (issued by the Scottish Ladies Golf Union and SGU) - but there are still a few envelopes which are now lying on top of the drawers next to the Competition Sign In folders. This can be used for discounted greenfees at other clubs and to set up the handicap certificate app on your phone and computer. Please collect ASAP.

Captains' Salver Competition

The past lady captains of Greenock Golf club enjoyed a very pleasant dinner at the club on Tuesday 12th August.

Unfortunately the tail end of hurricane Bertha resulted in some very stormy weather and the Captain's Salver was rescheduled to Tuesday 16th September.

The weather did not dampen the spirits of all those attending the dinner and a good time was had by all.

Greenock travelled to Bothwell Castle today for the latest match in the Greenlees fixture list.

Despite the weather warnings, the heavy rain never materialised and both teams played in warm and sunny conditions. The course was enjoyed by all and many remarked on how much they liked the new layout, which included some attractive water features and bridges.

The result was Bothwell Castle 8 - Greenock 1.

The annual match against Skelmorlie for the Riddell Rosebowl was played today over Greenock golf course in dry and warm conditions - with the threatening rain staying off till the last player holed their putt on the 18th green.

As always, the match was played in a very friendly manner -- and the result this year was a win for Greenock 2 - 1.

Congratulations to Linda McDougall who won the Ladies Championship for the 17th time today by 5 & 4.

Linda played Mo Neilson in the final and the spectators were treated to some excellent golf played in a great spirit.

Both players played many wonderful shots but it was Linda's short game that proved the decisive factor.

Linda's 17th title equals the record held by the late Kathleen McNeil of 17 Ladies Championship titles.

Our final West Renfrewshire Golf League match of the season was held today.

This was a home match against Ralston Golf Club.

Pessimistic weather forecasts predicted heavy rain with possible thunderstorms.....fortunatley the forecast was wrong. Black clouds loomed ominously overhead, but remarkably it stayed dry......to everyone's relief.

The result was Greenock 0.5 - Ralston 5.5.

Today was Captain's Flag Day at the Golf Club.

On a beautiful, warm, sunny afternoon, the Ladies teed off mid afternoon with Flag in hand.

It was perfect conditions for golf.....plenty of run and plenty of sun.

Whilst the Ladies played in the competition, our Captain Sandra Macdougall held an afternoon tea with 5 of the long standing members of the club. Delightful home baking was served and it was lovely to catch up with everyone over tea.

Meanwhile back on the course, the Flag was planted by the first game out on the 18th Green by Mo Neilson. Kerri McGill came closest to moving the Flag by finishing just before the 18th green. Despite the best efforts of the other players, nobody could move the Flag past the 18th green. Congratulations to Mo, the winner of the Flag Day.

It was also lovely to see several of our 9 hole members taking part in the day by playing over the 9 hole course.

In the evening everyone enjoyed a delicious meal at the Club with plenty of banter.......a perfect end to a perfect summer's day.

The Greenlees team headed south down the Ayrshire coast today to play Belleisle Golf Club in Ayr.

On what turned out a beautiful sunny afternoon, the players had ideal playing conditions for the match. With plenty of bunkers all over the course, staying out the sand was a game in itself. The greens were tricky too read also.

Despite large black clouds during the mid afternoon, the day stayed dry and everyone enjoyed the challenging course.

The result was Belleisle 8.5 - Greenock - 0.5.

Greenock defended the Megawatt Trophy today against Kilmacolm and Gourock at Kilmacolm Golf Club.

The conditions were perfect - sunny with a light breeze - and the Kilmacolm course was looking at its best - with some very fast greens and tricky rough.

Played in threes in a stableford format, the matches were all played in a very friendly spirit with the result being a victory for Kilmacolm, who won on home ground.

Result: Kilmacolm 89 points, Greenock 81 points, Gourock 73 points.

The Greenlees team headed to Cawder Golf Club today for their 5th match of the season.

Forecasts of warm sunshine were promised, and hopes were high for a long hot summer's afternoon of golf. Overcast skies at tee off initially prevented the sunshine shining through. By, mid afternoon the sun did appear however and conditions became very pleasant for golf.

With the greens fast, and with plenty of greenside bunkers, the course was a challenge for both teams.

The final result, Cawder 7 - Greenock 2.

Both teams agreed to play a Greensome and all agreed that this was an excellent format for the friendly match.

The end result was a win for Greenock 2.5 to 0.5.

Today we held the Ladies Open Day at Greenock Golf Club.

As before, the format was a Greensome Stableford and this year 42 ladies took to the fairways.

The morning started dry and despite spits and spots of rain, it stayed mainly dry till about 2pm. More persistent rain then fell around lunchtime, but it was never a cold day. As we are now into June, it did feel like a early summers day despite the rain.

The overall winners were Anne Judge (Ranfurly Castle) and Linda McDougall (Greenock) who scored a very creditable 35 points. The runners up were Helen Armstrong (Greenock) and Elaine Freeman (Skemorlie) who scored 33 points.

The raffle raised a wonderful £350 and this will be donated to the Rheumatology Department at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Greenock.

Many thanks to our generous sponsors especially A.P. Jess Ltd and also for all the sponsors at the sponsored holes.

The M74 south was the Greenlees team's next destination with an away match at Lanark Golf Club today.

With so much rain recently, it was a delight to feel the warmth of the sun. With the course being amazingly dry, there was a good deal of run...........the greens were fast too.

Forecasts had predicted heavy showers during the afternoon. Sure enough, the skies darkened and rumbles of thunder were heard in the distance. Rain did fall briefly, but despite a brief bit of lightning in the distance, the thunder and lightning drifted away from the golf course.

Unfortunately, the overall result was not quite as sunny as the warm day.

Carlyle and Caird 2 - Competition Cancelled

Sorry, everyone - but when we got to the fourth green tonight, the four ladies playing at 5.00pm found the hole filled to the top with water and the green was unplayable. The competition has therefore been cancelled and rescheduled  - and will now be played this coming Monday 26th May (which was a free day). Please check with existing partners or rearrange if necessary - and remember to take a time in advance as Monday is a holiday.

Scores submitted today will count for handicap purpose - but the good news is that no one will go up! Commiserations to those who had good scores.

IMPORTANT - Thursday 19th June - Carlyle and Caird 3

Please note that there is a visiting party from the West College Scotland on the above date, tee booked from 9.45 am till 11.15 am - 24 people / 12 games. For this reason, I am giving you all advance notice that you should plan your games around this slot. The early morning ladies should be prepared to play a little earlier than usual and the mid morning ladies should choose to play earlier or later than usual to avoid getting caught up behind the party - the players going out from midday onwards will not be affected.

Please make sure you pre-book your tee time in advance with Kevin in the usual way - he will have blocked out the tee times for the party.

Cowglen Golf Club were the visitors today at Greenock in our first home Greenlees game this year.

Despite recent dreich and wet days, the skies were clear and sunny and most importantly, it was dry as the 1pm tee off approached. "Never cast a clout till May is out" or so they say but for once it felt warm as the teams prepared to tee off.

As the first matches approached the Lyle Hill, dark clouds started to build across the water. Surely it wouldn't rain!! Sure enough in a few minutes a sudden sharp shower was overhead. Not only was it raining, but it was raining hailstones! Waterproofs were on and then just as quickly as the shower, the waterproofs were off. Thereafter, the skies cleared and the sun came out, and for once, it felt more like a Spring afternoon in May.

The final result of the match was Greenock 3 - Cowglen 6.

Our first Greenlees game this season was held today with an away match at Eastwood Golf Club.

A cold wind made it feel more like March than May, but during the afternoon the wind became lighter and it felt a little more Spring like despite the overcast skies.

Set amidst moorland and farmland, the undulating course which was playing long today, was a good test for both teams.

The final result was Eastwood 8 - Greenock 1.

Ladies Fashion Show and Quiz Night

34 lady members and friends enjoyed an evening of fashion and fun at Greenock Golf Club last night.

Kevin Campbell, our professional, kicked off the evening with his display of merchandise from Addidas/Ashworth and Glenbrae - and many ladies placed their orders for the coming season.

This was followed by a Quiz, at times noisy and very competitive, which was won by the "Us Yins" team consisting of Helen Armstrong, Cecile Fleming, Fiona Cook, Rosetta Quinn and Margaret Nelson.

A good time was had by all and the sum of £250 was raised for ladies' section funds.

    Hello Everyone.

The Ladies Match and Handicap were looking at the possibility of playing our competitions on mats - and applying the CONGU Rule for inclement weather. This allows the use of mats and also allows us to count the scores for handicap purposes up until the end of April. However, having taken advice from Kevin today, I believe that although mats can be used in qualifying competitions, there is no allowance for dropping the ball in the rough - and I know not all ladies have mats and some don't like using them, preferring to drop off the fairway - so this is no longer going to be an option.

I would suggest that you all check with the professional on Monday to see if mats are still in use - if this is the case, then we will run a sweep and shift the Brooch to Thursday 26th June ( which is scheduled to be a sweep). If mats are no longer in use then we will play the Brooch on Monday as planned. George Deveney is hopeful that Thursday may see us back on the fairways.

Once again, apologies for all the changes, but the weather is outwith anyone's control.

The Greenock Mail on Sunday team played their 3rd round match at Kilmacolm Golf Club this afternoon.

Despite it being April, it didn't feel Spring like as cold and breezy conditions made golfing very difficult for all.

Thankfully spits and spots of rain came to nothing, and perhaps the strong winds helped to keep the rain away.

At the 19th hole, everyone soon heated up with a hearty bowl of Spinach and Rocket soup.

Unfortunately the Greenock team lost the match.

The final score Kilmacolm 4 - Greenock 1

    Hello Everyone.

I've just been advised by the Management Committee that the use of mats is being extended until Friday - so the March Medal is being moved again - and due to weather conditions - we will now play it on Monday 28th April ( which was a free day - the alternative March Medal will remain on Sunday 20th April. )

I'm sorry about all the changes - but as you know it is outwith our control and conditions are very wet underfoot. Hopefully we should get back to normal conditions next week in time for the rescheduled Golf Foundation Brooch on Monday 14th and the April Medal on Thursday 17th. If there is a further extension of the mats being used into next week I will email you all again and put a notice on the Board and in the professional's shop.

To accommodate those of us who are desperate to swing a club, we will run a sweep on Thursday 10th April - with ballots at the usual times of 9.15 am, 11.00am, 1.00pm and 2.15pm. We will be playing on mats, but the forecast looks quite promising!

    Saturday, 5th April 2014

    Hello Everyone

Please note that we will still be using mats on Monday 7th April, so the stableford will be a non-counting competition. The Management Committee will review the conditions on Tuesday, so as soon as I know the outcome of their meeting, I will let you know if Thursday's medal can go ahead.

Also - for those of you intending to play the Alternative Days - see changes below ( we have had to rearrange dates to take account of the use of mats and the masters shotgun on the 13th, which starts at 12 noon.)

Alternative March Medal - new date Sunday 20th April ( was 6th April / main day 10th April)

Alternative April Medal - new date Sunday 27th April (was 13th April / main day 17th April)

Alternative Spring Meeting - new date Sunday 4th May ( was 20th April / main day 24th April)

Alternative May Medal - new date Sunday 11th May ( was 4th May / main day 8th May)

    Thanks, Sandra

    March Medal Postponed

    Hello Everyone

Mats are still being used today, so the March Medal has been postponed. The NEW DATE is next Thursday 10th March ( instead of the Golf Foundation Brooch).

The Golf Foundation Brooch is now moved to Monday 14th April and the Magic Multiplier is cancelled.

The Alternative March Medal is still scheduled for this Sunday 6th April - but will be subject to review re the use of mats.

Let's hope for a drier spell of weather soon.

    Message from the Ladies Captain

    Hello Ladies.

Thanks to all who supported the Drinks Evening last Friday, and thanks to everyone's generosity, we raised a net profit of £195 from raffle and ticket money - which will cover the costs of our new computer. We are very grateful to Charlie Paul for his help in setting up the PC along with Heather, Rosetta, Anne Terrey and Mo - and we hope that there will be a big improvement in the recording and reporting of our scores (assuming that they are worth reporting!)

Charlie Paul was also hard at work with Dorothy Fisher in creating a new look for the Ladies Section web pages. Our pages have now been amalgamated with the main Greenock Golf Club website (Please note that the old Ladies Website will no longer be updated.)

Quiz and Fashion Evening - Wednesday 16th April : I hope you have all put this date in your diaries and will encourage your friends to come along too. The evening starts early - at 6.00 pm with golf clothes on sale from Kevin's suppliers - followed at 7.30 pm by a quiz night with teams consisting of a maximum of 5 people. Don't worry if you haven't made arrangements to be part of a team - we can make up numbers on the night. A member of the committee will be in touch to remind you of this event and it would be helpful if you could give us an idea of numbers.

We look forward to seeing you on the course and at the Quiz and Fashion Night.

    Best wishes,

    Lady Captain

Our Ladies Mail on Sunday team teed off today in the second round tie at home against Whitecraigs Golf Club. With both teams having received a bye in the first round, this was the first competitive game for both clubs.

Despite very wet conditions underfoot and early morning rain, the skies brightened as the 12 noon tee off approached. On early holes the players were sheltered somewhat, but by the time the ladies had reached the 7th hole on the Lyle Hill, the winds had freshened and squally showers made conditions difficult for both team down the "loop".

The final result was a win for the Greenock team. Greenock 3 - Whitecraigs 2.

This Sunday the Ladies Winter Golf will take place with a 1.30pm tee off - weather permitting.

If you feel like playing a few holes in preparation for the season ahead, meet up at the Clubhouse for 1.15pm when the draw will take place.

    Thursday, 13th March 2014

After the cancellation of last Thursday's competition due to the weather, the Ladies managed to tee off the new season today with a 18 hole Stableford.

Six ladies took to the fairways and despite drizzle later in the day, most players managed to get round dry.

The winner was Linda McDougall with 35 points and second was Kerri McGill with 33 points.

Hello Ladies. Our first social event of the 2014 year takes place in a few weeks time and I hope many of you will be able to come along and celebrate the fast approaching March Medal! The evening will tee off at 8.00pm and will follow the usual format - it will be a relaxed evening with drinks and canapes (£8 ticket for two non alcoholic drinks / £10 ticket for two alcoholic drinks) and everyone will get the chance to catch up on news and get your golf diary organised for the coming season.

Please mark the date in your diary and a committee member will be in touch over the next few weeks to check your availability. I attach a fixture list and look forward to seeing you all soon.

    Best wishes, Sandra
