Club Championship 2015 Matchplay Update

After a couple of super nights of golf we are left with two extremely interesting semi finals.
On Monday we saw the unique situation where all three Rhoy Bhoys fell at the first hurdle in games which were always going to be tight. Paul McFarlane saw off Ian Doak and Stevie Gordon continued great form in his win over Alex McGregor. David MacFarlane, as probably expected, would have a win over Gordon Cameron. In the battle of the youngsters, Jack Currie prevailed over Chris McAulay. The relative upset of the night came from Gerry Donnachie when he defeated Jonny Caldwell.

The quarter finals on Wednesday saw Crawford Rae moving along quite efficiently in his win over Paul McFarlane. Graeme McLellan ran into the absolute form player in Paul Dorrian. We are convinced Graeme will relish the day when he gains entry into the Seniors championship and be rid of these youngsters!
David MacFarlane would come through against Gerry Donnachie and it was a good result for Jack Currie against Stevie Gordon.

This has set up the following lineup for the semi finals, which have a "veteran" up against a youngster. Seven times champion, Crawford Rae will be up against the current Menzies Champion (Renfrewshire championship for youths aged between 18 and 23 ), Inverclyde Junior Champion and Renfrewshire Junior champion in Paul Dorrian. Paul won the Menzies recently after a 2 hole playoff. 2 tough opponents who bring differing aspects to their match.

The other game, between Renfrewshire champion, David MacFarlane and Jack Currie is another oldie versus youngster.

Difficult to gauge how these games will pan out, but the young bucks might have an advantage in length and disrespect of their elders but the older guys have a whole raft of experience and have been over the course many times. If anyone is at a loose end on Friday, then a pop up to the course might be quite interesting.

Club Championship Qualifier - Sat 25 July 2015

Club Championship 2015 Draw

Well, we certainly do live in interesting times. Even after a weather affected championship we still have a hugely interesting matchplay set of fixtures. As always there are multiple champions and first time qualifiers and everything in between.

We should surely begin with the holder. After back to back wins Cammy Jones was looking for an historic "threepeet" and was probably looking forward to the draw, after a birdie at the first hole. However, that was the highlight of the day for the champion and he missed out by a few strokes.

One major score of the day was by Brian Stevenson with a career best of 75. Unfortunately, work commitments, meant Brian could not make a debut in the matchplay rounds and he withdrew. This meant that those on 77 were in, except for Jimmy McAulay who missed out on the countback.

The crazy idea of the draw being made pre start definitely meant some imaginative games.

Top of the draw is seven times winner Crawford Rae, whose last win was in 2002 against the 2010 champion in Kenny Roy.  Comparing both players' recent form then we need to go with Crawford who has been more consistent over the year as opposed to Kenny's more immediate results. Crawford also won the last time they met, albeit in 2012. This should be the tie of the round.

Out next came Paul McFarlane who seems to qualify at will every year and who is always a dangerous opponent. Up against Paul is the player of the year, so far, in Ian Doak. Golfwise Ian is on a tremendous run and his second appearance in the matchplay will please the Y125 medal winner no end. Paul, much more battle hardened, should come through this match.

With all the Rhoy Bhoys qualifying, the draw has put them all in the top half. Alex, whose matchplay mystique took a real dent in the Seniors Championship against Alan Young, will find life difficult when up against Paul Dorrian. Although there was only a shot between them on Saturday, Alex will find he cannot give away more than thirty years as well as three shots as regards handicap.

The final Roy is Al, champion in 2012 and he is matched up against Graeme McLellan. Incredibly difficult one to call as there is no way of knowing which Al nor which Graeme will turn up. Al, whose pre match routine is something even Lord Sewel would be proud of, might just fancy going all the way to the final but so could Graeme. If both play to their best then we must plump for Al in a tight match which could go to extra holes.

The prodigal ( yes, Jonny, prodigal, nothing else) son has returned and sneaked into the matchplay in last place thanks to Brian Stevenson. Jonny Cod, who featured in a rainwashed and rain postponed final many years ago (nothing changes) has come back from his overseas adventures to try to go one step further. His opponent in the first round is Gerry Donnachie. Indiana Jones could not come up with the date the last time Gerry got to this point but we reckon it might be nearly ten years ago. Jonny to progress.

Last years beaten finalist, David MacFarlane, has, as is the norm, qualified again.  Up against the Renfrewshire champion of 2014 is newcomer to this stage, Gordon Cameron, who had a couple of birdies at 17 and 18 to complete his round to gain entry. Gordon will not disgrace himself but will eventually lose out.

Stevie Gordon has managed to get into the matchplay rounds yet again. His best ever run featured a notable scalp in Crawford Rae. This time he plays another youngster coming back to the club in past championship finalist, Alex McGregor.
Steven has had some really good scores this years and Alex is a bit of an unknown quantity. Perhaps we should take the advice of George Anderson, who thought Alex's handicap allocation of six was too steep! A bit of a stab in the dark but Stevie to go through.

The final game sees the number one qualifier and junior Y125 medal winner, Jack Currie take on a beaten finalist in Chris McAulay. A seven shot differential in scoring on Saturday cannot be ignored so Jack to progress.

With youngsters Chris, Jack, Alex, The Cod, Paul and also non qualifier Cammy the club is in safe hands as regards youth coming through. We look forward to a championship which will always have a bit of unforeseen drama and is worth coming along to view. The players really welcome spectators and this lends to the occasion.
Matches take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting at 5pm.

March Medal - Sat 11 July 2015

Seems my Inglish has failed me. The 125 gala golf day is open to all gentlemen members regardless of handicap and any junior who has a single figure handicap.

Yesterday we even had Wednesday's record scorer Laurence Deveney asking " Who the heck is David Hutchison?". A net 58 is only a shot worse than the best I have ever come across. A 7 at fourteen and the same at seventeen take some gloss of a brilliant round. With a handicap of 22, David started with 2 birdies and followed this up with another three pars on the way out. A par at 11 is pretty tidy and then he dropped in three more pars in his last six holes. The computer takes him down to 18.4 but I believe we can do a bit better than that for him?
Alistair Campbell and Stephen Connelly were left trailing way behind in joint second place with net 66.

In the second section Kenny Gilmour recovered well from a start of 6,5,5 to return a net 69. Also scoring this was Allan McPherson who will be a bit disappointed to finish with four 5s on the spin. Ross McWilliams will be even more so as he lost out on the medal by a shot having played the last four holes in six over. The outright winner of the March medal is Jim Fulton and this is just reward for the hard work Jim has done in tidying up the garden at the front of the clubhouse. A front nine of 43 gave no indication of what the back nine might hold. Turning back the years to his single figure days Jim played holes 10 to 16 in one under par and finished with two bogeys for a net 66.

Section one saw some big guns warming up for next week's club championship qualifying with excellent scoring. Past Champions Alistair Roy (70), Kenny Roy (73) and Murdie Carmichael (70) were just flexing their golfing muscles before the big one comes along. Campbell Gisbey (72) is another who could go a long way.
Si Middleton is a perennial qualifier for the matchplay rounds and, like, yesterday, usually takes the gas at the crucial stage. A finish of 6,4 meant a one under par back nine was turned into a one over.

  • Turner Quaich & Seniors Qualifier - Saturday 30 May 2015

All the hullabaloo on Saturday morning surrounded Crawford Rae's date of birth and the fact that the rank and file member had absolutely no chance of even qualifying for the Seniors Championship matchplay rounds now that the rumour mongers had Crawford and Alex Roy and the Mauler and Murdie and Jonny Caldwell and Cammy McLellan now eligible. Am sure that Cammy Jones and Paul Dorrian's names were mentioned at some point! What a panic!
As it turned out, the qualifying score was, yet again, 84, which is not outwith the reach of a host of mid handicap players. Those who just got in will enjoy the experience of playing in a scratch event, unlike Charlie Marner who sneaked in last year and thought that his eight shots from Martin Kane would be enough to get to round two!

As usual, a random draw (not sure if the internet description is anything like how the real thing is done, but there you go) throws up the chance for the lesser lights to progress if the randomiser is in their favour.

First out came the aforementioned Alex Roy. Alex played at the crack of dawn as he had a Holy Communion later in the day. God must have looked favourably upon this as he qualified comfortably. His opponent is Davie Carney, also a first timer. Davie is on a wee bit of a hot streak just now. The handicap difference is difficult to guage  as David has drifted up a tad and Alex is a lot better than his 5. Driven on by being the only Roy not to be a club champion, I think Alex is favourite for this one. (We await Davie's riposte with interest!)

Game two sees a previous champion, Alan Young up against a previous finalist in the big championship, Alan Wylie. As the leading qualifier, we go for Alan Young.

Two first time qualifiers meet up in Charlie Paul and Bill Crawford. Interesting one this. Both play quite a lot and both will want to progress. Bill won the handicap version last year and went up to Whinhill yesterday for the Inverclyde champion of champions and finished second.
This is a complete toss of the coin and we go for Bill.

How about another first timer in Neil Delussey against a former winner, John C Houston. This is very tight to call but greens convenor, John will have the distinct advantage of setting the course up to suit himself as witnessed on Saturday with the position of the pin at the third. There is a distinct possibility that the tees will actually be cut for this match! The advantage of playing many years in the championship will also give John the win.

Kenny Gilmour takes on Gordon McFarlane in the next game out. Big Gordon has waited and waited for his chance to make a move in the event and the draw has been kind to him. There is a route to the semi final for the big man and he will take it.

Another two newcomers meet up in game 6. Dr Fraser Gray and Eddie Ptolomey. This is the opportunity that Eddie has waited for! With the cut off date for playing the tie being four weeks he now has the chance to finally get some GP to look at his bad back! Have got to go for Fraser on this occasion.

Again, another two novices at this stage. Bob Hughes will take on the Mauler Maitland. This will be good experience for Bob to see how the better golfers perform close up! At least twice has Duncan reached the big final and he will be the real dark horse in this whole process.

Three on the spin winner, Alan Hulme, another GP, (where do they get the time?) lines up against Charlie Marner who is having an decent season. Strangely, only a few weeks ago, Charlie, Charlie Paul, Kenny Gilmour, David Carney and Gordon McFarlane went away on a bevvy (sorry, golfing) holiday to Spain and they all have qualified. Only big Eck did not feature, but he did not complete the full overseas training schedule, I believe. Charlie will exit the event along with most of the rest.

In the battle for the Turner Quaich for the over 65s (even Paolo did not tick that one!) we saw excellent scoring from the two final contenders. Robert Cambell really turned (get it?) the clock back with his net 67 and was equal with Alan Young. Only a countback would separate them and Alan wins his first ever Turner prize.

As regard players outwith the Seniors, praise must go to David Anderson who has driven his handicap down to 16 with a net 63. David played off 24 only a couple of seasons ago.

David Jamieson is another player who is improving all the time and almost reached single figures on Saturday after his 65, which featured a two over par back nine.

Mark McCaig, who, last Sunday, won the Tennent Trophy along with David MacFarlane, has also been on song and will be pleased with a net 66. Chris Connelly is another improving fast player and his 66 has taken him to his lowest handicap.

  • Wednesday Sweep - 27 May 2015

  • Due to the weather closing in and no one being able to play after 1400, the competition went ahead, but as a Wednesday Sweep. This did not stop David Carney having a run of three birdies in a row at 6, 7 and 8!

Please remember that tomorrow is the Seniors Championship and you must indicate that you are over 55 on the day if you wish to be included in the draw.

I am sure that one day Paolo will be 55, but that will be the time he does not get a score.

Oliver, the  new pro, has requested to run a raffle each Saturday, where there will be a limited number of tickets available.
It should be pointed out that this is purely voluntary and members may choose to refrain if they wish.

  • Reid Rose Bowl - Saturday 23 May 2015

Saturday witnessed the start of the campaign to find the winner of one of the most sought after trophies within the club in the Reid Rose Bowl. By the time the majority of the 160 contenders thought about getting out of bed, social media was red hot with the news that a 63 had already been recorded and it was only half past nine. Yes, he actually did what many thought was impossible. Big Eck did not better his age but finally bettered his time! A 63 with a seven up fifteen! How tempted must have been the self appointed M & H to call off a competition for the second week in a row.

This revelation obviously unsettled the remainder of the field as the qualifying score did not drop as low as predicted. The cut was made at a reasonable 68. Shortly after Eck came home, Gordon Cameron, playing off six had a career round of 68 and the best scratch score of the season so far which included three birdies in his opening five holes and a two under par front nine. Steady play on the way home would mean a net 62 and a cut to five.
The third best qualifier was Stevie Cameron (2) whose language was a bit interesting when he discovered that his 64 did not take any of the higher places. Gazumped by Eckie Thump.

When the dust finally settled we found that there were only 5 qualifiers from the first section (2 category ones in Graeme McLellan and Paul Dorrian), 4 from section two and the remaining 7 from section three. Not exactly Greenock's Got Talent.

Hypnotic dogs and Burlesque geriatrics might be more interesting than this lot.
Anyway, something which looked similar to a random draw took place under the cover of darkness and the following resulted.

First out was big Stevie Cameron who was pitted against the only previous winner, and a double one at that, inGraeme McLellan. Having been over the course before it looks like a taxi for Stevie in this one.

A grand total of forty shots, as regards handicaps, should mean a tight game between Adam Brown and Sean Millar. Adam has recently been battle hardened in the art of matchplay golf when he represented the club at Gleddoch and was quietly and systematically taken apart. Sean has had the not-to-be-underestimated handicap allocation from the self appointed one so will be the red hot favourite for this match.

In game three, we have one of the golden oldies against the youngest player to reach the matchplay stages. Kenny Gilmour will attempt to use his wise old ways and lull Renfrewshire County matchplay champion Paul Dorrian into a false sense of security. Nae chance even with 10 shots.

Sixteenth qualifier and eighteen handicapper, Bob Hossack is up against sixteen handicapper Stevie Cameron. A very steady round from Stevie, who must be comfortable off this handicap, makes him the clear favourite for this tie.

Charlie Marner who has eventually managed to find his way around the course secured his place with a net net 67. He might be a tad apprehensive when he discovers Euan Cannon only had a net 68 but this featured an eight at the last. Can Charlie survive when giving away four strokes? Sorry, maybe the Whinhill seniors might be a better bet.

Interestingly, the two best qualifiers in Gordon Cameron and Alex Jasper came out the hat together. Matching their scores as a matchplay game they ended up all square. If Eck brings out his secret weapon in the White Fang 3 wood, then Gordon will coast it. Ten shots in Alex's favour will actually swing it in his direction.

Twenty handicap Stevie Wilkie is up against last year's Challenge Cup winner, Gordon McTavish. Big Haggis had 8 pars and a birdie on Saturday. Two of the pars came at eleven and fifteen. Would be really interesting to see how many others achieved this. Haggish has also had a 100% record in his two County Cup matches. It would take all of the 7 shots on offer for Stevie to overcome such form. Gordon to go through in this one.

The final match sees Stevie's nephew, Robbie Wilkie come up against Joe Mitchell. Twelve handicapper Joe had a terrific front nine which had eight straight fours and a five at the ninth for a two over par front nine. A couple of unforced errors would result in a net 67. Young Robbie would start each half with a double bogey and put in a recovery. Again, six shots is the difference in this one, but believe that Robbie will have too much in his locker for Joe.

If anyone is still with this, then congratulations go to Steven Orr who had a hole in one at 16 and will receive a Hugo Boss watch for his efforts.

  • Saturday Sweepstake - 16 May 2015

  • It was obviously a point of debate as to whether calling off the Y125 medal was justified. At the end of the day, however, we are trying to ensure a memorable event for a full field. We only had four net scores in the sixties!

Frank Molloy would let a tremendous score slip through his hands (a la QOS goalie) with a 4,4,5 finish. He would still win the first section.

Section three had no player with a net score better than 70. Stephen Connelly and the ever improving Michael O'Neill would share top spot with a 70.

In section two, Ross McWilliams had a genuine run at the record of four twos in a single round but would fall short at 16 after birdies at 3 , 10 , 13. Three twos is still quite memorable.
In the middle section David Finlay would find himself runner up with a net 68 with a hugely consistent round of golf.
The winner of the Saturday Sweepstake of May 16 (does not seem to have any sort of kudous or ring to it!) was Allan Scott.  Allan had a great finish of one over for his last six holes in really poor conditions. Well done on a good handicap cut.

The Tennent trophy takes place this Sunday and there are still a few places remaining.

  • Provost Trophy 2015

  • With terrific scores of net 61 were Murdie Carmichael and yes, you did not guess it, Mark McCaig. The other pairing was that of centenary year champion Frank Molloy and , only god knows why, PC (this does not mean politically correct) Jim Orr.
A comeuppance in the matchplay beckons.
A quick look at the aforementioned games throws up very interesting ties.

Current Renfrewshire champion Paul Dorrian and Chris McAulay play Kenny Piper and Stuart Gallacher. Lets not waste any time dwelling over the outcome of this one. Kenny and Stuart have had their chances over the years and this tie will make 2015 no different.

Now, Neil Delussey and John Houston, record winner of the event, are up against Ian Doak and Davie Robertson. The Delussey and Houston match against Dorrian and McAulay might be a tough one to call.

If there is any justice David Bryant and Gordon Cameron will put the PC and the Centenary Champ to the sword, but somehow I do not think so.

Murdie and Mark take on Stevie Gordon, who has had a stellar start to the season, and Tom McLoughlin. With the 3/4 handicap allocation, Murdie will be too powerful an opponent and will drag Mark into the next round.

It is as clear as daylight that the overall winner will come from the above set of games. Have a look below and see if you think any of them are capable of winning this competition.

Mick O'Brien and Richie Pickett will play the elderly Raymond Barr and Jim Kerr. Albeit Raymond and Jim will have a wealth of experience and stories that will not be anywhere near enough to see them progress.

DJ McKirdy and Chris Connelly, who prove that anyone can have a lucky day and qualify, will play recently allocated handicappers in Lewis Watt and Mark Dorrian. New handicaps? I await the complaints from Chris and DJ already.

Charlie Paul and Duncan Maitland have the honour of playing the holders, Pat Tinney and Alex Roy. Alex selected Charlie as his incoming Captain but will be turned over by the Mauler and Charlie as they dont like to hang around too long.

The final game is Gordon McFarlane and David Carney against Craig Brown and Paul Alford. I dont know about Paul but the other three are on the course all the time and this is a hard one to pick. The easiest prediction is to go with my historical ones involving this group so, and Gordon and Davie, know what's coming, its Craig and Paul for me.

  • Wednesday Sweep - 6 May 2015

  • The weather has not been kind to us at all. By this time last year we had 20 competitions as opposed to the 12 up to now.
With conditions difficult, the Lyle Medal is totally up for grabs as no one dropped in a runaway score.

This Saturday sees the Provost Trophy qualifying. Firstly, may I politely remind everyone that it costs an extra mandatory contribution of £1 per person, which goes towards the Provosts Charity fund.
Having had a look at the past 10 years scores, the target for qualifying is 66 or better. Occasionally, a 67 will get in on the countback.

The timesheet for this years Tennent Trophy (which is a fourball) will go out over the weekend. If anyone would like a time put down before this then please just drop me a note with names.

  • SGU Qualifier - 25 April 2015

  • Well done to all who contributed a pound last Saturday for the CHAS Day.

Fantastic scoring was witnessed from James Glove who continues to drive his handicap down, having been extremely close to winning the most improved golfer last year. Seventy two strokes will be his best ever round and drives his handicap down even further.

Past champion Kenny Roy, who has drifted up to five produced a round from the distant past with a seventy.
Alan Currie, who only real golfing claim to fame is that he is the faither of Jack, also shot a career round of seventy four, net sixty four. This means he joins James to go forward to the Belhaven event later in the year. One small tip! Watch the video from last year and see how Jonesy achieved his moment in the golfing sun!

In section three we saw a tie for first place, with all three players scoring net sixty seven.
As well as a decent handicap reduction they are all eligible for a place at the CHAS Day at Largs GC.

Our new Pro, Oliver, has started and we can all meet up with him over the weekend.

We recently saw the second of this year's trophies being contended for. Over the previous five seasons we have had scores very similar to this year's winning one. However, what is interesting is that, since 2010, we generally never see at least one of the winners defend their trophy. John Leith, Paul Weston, Andy Jamieson, Craig Thomson, Mark Taylor, Chris Docherty have been part of the last five winning partnerships and have disappeared into the ether.

The third placed team, playing off a handicap of 14, would have been reasonably pleased with a front nine of forty. Eventually finishing three shots behind the winning team Jim Duncan and drew Bryceland would have needed to complete the last two holes in level par to snatch the trophy. As it was, they dropped the required three shots over those two holes.

  • With a few pounds tucked away for their efforts they can now move on from "Hole in One Gate" of a previous week, where, dependant upon who tells the story, Drew dropped his tee shot at the third into either the eye of a needle or a hole the size of the Grand Canyon for a Hole in One.

The runners up this year, Peter Gallagher and Lawrence Ngomo, finished two shots behind the winners, Willie Kemp and David Anderson.

  • Taking handicaps into consideration, Willie and David had a couple of shots to play with. After the turn, however, the two teams were tied equally as far as net scores were concerned. After twelve holes Willie and David were three shots ahead and coasting. Lawrence, fresh from a debut win in the Crawford Bogey, stepped up to the plate and due to his performance the deficit was reduced to one shot going down the last couple of holes. Not to be outdone, big hitting Willie launched a pair of monster drives down the final holes and they secured the cup. David has now added the Navy Cup to last year's Charity Salver whilst Willie might need to fill a trophy this time around as his previous two wins have been the Centenary and Challenge Quaichs.

Well done this week to Paul Dorrian. Even the rigours of running the shop did not stop Paul from competing in the Renfrewshire Junior Champion of Champions. Paul's biggest scare in the event came in the quarter finals where he found himself four down after four holes but stuck in and came through. Paul overwhelmed his opponents in both the semi final and final and was never behind. Well done to Paul in bringing a large piece of reflected glory to the club in its 125th year.

  • Wednesday Sweepstake 9 April 2015

With the weather taking a real good turn for the better we saw a reasonable turnout for this early in the year.

Steven Gordon has now picked up back to back scratch prizes and has got off to a flier, reducing his handicap to 4, where he has been a few times over years.

Matt Bonnar playing off eleven will not know whether to be happy or sad. Matt raced to the turn in level par and then ran up five dropped shots in the next three holes and then completed what might have been a career round with a double bogey.

Murdo Parker showed that he could plug away and used all his shots to win the cash in section 3.

Can I remind everyone that the auction for courses will close this Sunday evening and, if anyone wishes to make a bid or, indeed, they have a limit they would be prepared to go to, then just let me know.
Royal Troon is the venue for next year's Open and is one of the most difficult courses to get a game on. Rosemount, at Blairgowrie, is supplying the leading amateur at this years Masters and is really special.
Glasgow Gailes has hosted numerous Open qualifying rounds and championships over the years.

So, all in all, the three courses should be on every golfer's "must play" list.

We also now intend to raffle another two fourballs. One is Irvine Bogside which is another championship course and the other is Ranfurly Castle, which, is spectacular in the height of Summer. We are going to limit the number of these raffle tickets to 200 and they will be £2 each. An absolute steal for the winner.

We would urge everyone to help support both of these initiatives as the income generated will be used specifically for the benefit of the members over the year.

Winning team of John Burns, Tom McLoughlin, Stuart Alexander and Steven Gordon will represent the club at Scottish Hydro Texas Scramble at Eastwood GC later in the year.

Saturday 7 March 2015

Well, the start of season was a real damp squib. No one played on Saturday, not even Nicol and we only then got a handful of groups going out on the Sunday.

We also, incredibly, had the first (and last) round of the Mail on Sunday team match. A reasonable team of Jimmy McAulay, Davie Heron, Alistair Livingstone, Pat Tinney and Chris Connelly were pitted against Ranfurly Castle. We were at home. We had the advantage of knowing distances, slopes, nuances of each and every hole. It should have been a walkover. It was!

The upshot was yet another humiliating defeat before the season even gets underway. Unless we can find a loophole of Legia Warsaw proportions we, again, are left wondering what team golf looks like in April. It would be utterly wrong to single out those who got turned over on their ain midden, so congratulations go to Jimmy and Davie for a couple of wins. The other three all complained that it was too early in the season (the opponents are from upper Renfrewshire, not from South Africa) so,I truly believe their weather is no different to our own.

Next week's competition is a Texas Scramble. We have recently received an invite from the SGU to send a team to take part in the Scottish Hydro Scramble, with the regional final being held at Eastwood GC on Sunday May 10. From this day a number of clubs will progress to Spey Valley later in the year. The only caveat is that their event is for a team of three and our competition is for four players. The winning team from Saturday (or Sunday) can choose their three man lineup.
