    Saturday 11 October - Sweepstake

After sixty competitions, we have almost reached the end of another year. I hope everyone has taken advantage of being out and enjoying themselves and improving their golf.

On Saturday, the final opportunity to make inroads into the race to be the most consistent player in the club came to a conclusion. After a very competitive competition, effectively between Andy Jamieson and Alistair Roy, Al dropped in a score on Wednesday which meant he eventually overtook Andy and pipped him by 0.1 of a shot. For those who are unaware, this is for the Robert Spence trophy and is awarded to the player who has the best scoring average over any ten rounds of strokeplay.  Alistair was 68.8 against Andy's 68.9. This meant that Al retains his title from last year and has now won it twice.

This could also lead to a discussion as to who is the best player in the club. How would this be gauged?
The leading money winner? How crude it might be said. I am sure Gerry Donnachie is not concerned.
Perhaps Alistair Roy, handicap 0.5, and winner of said Spence trophy and with the best round, along with Andy Jamieson, of the year, with a 64, might suggest he has played the best golf over a whole season. With only a couple of Wednesday sweeps remaining, Alistair's position at the top of the eclectic leaderboard might be insurmountable and adds weight to his call.

Andy Jamieson, who won the club championship at Mar Hall, and who has the lowest handicap in the club with 0.1 could contest any debate. If we analyse Andy's versus Alistair's two 64 scratch scores, then it is not a surprise that they actually finish up all square. Not a lot between them.

David MacFarlane who lost in the final of the club championship, but made up for this, in winning the recent Renfrewshire County Matchplay has a handicap of 1.6. Does his handicap take him out?

Crawford Rae still maintains a handicap of 1.0 and hardy ever plays competitively. That is a real achievement.
Undoubtedly, Cameron Jones, the club champion for the second year in a row, will have huge support. He has taken on all comers for the past couple of years and not been defeated and has won his championships under intense scrutiny. Perhaps his handicap, which is not as low as others, might be a detractor.
Each one of them has a strong case.

    Wednesday Medal - 10 September 2014, CSS:69, Entries:120

  • There was really only the one show in town last week. On Wednesday, we had the final round of the Bennett Cup and the red hot favourite to clinch yet another piece of silverware was Andy Jamieson. Paddy Power had actually stopped taking bets on the outcome of the competition.

  • How wrong they were. Alistair Roy turned up and produced one of his best rounds of the last few years. Since the start of 2010 Alistair has scored 67 on two occasions and he chose Wednesday to drop in another which converted to a net 66 and added to a previous 66 (off 2 that time) to give a 132 total and pip Andy by a single shot. Out in level par and with a run of seven pars it took a birdie at seventeen to clinch the deal. This will probably atone for losing the final of the Provost to Alex and Pat Tinney only a couple of days earlier.

  • Probably on some sort of a high, Alistair would find himself on the first tee on Saturday, partnered by Paul McFarlane and Steven Mullan, reflecting on his glorious win. A nice balmy afternoon and a stroll around the course was probably the most on his mind. A regulation par at the first was followed by an eagle at the second and a birdie at the third. Then he went par, eagle, birdie. 6 under after 6 is not a bad start to any round and must have caught his attention somewhat. A dropped shot at seven would result in an outward half of 30 strokes. With Steven out in 36 and Paul in 37 it must have been incredible golf all round. Al would bogey the tenth only to birdie the eleventh (which is totally the wrong way around) and another would follow at twelve. Back to six under. Level par for the last six holes would equal a course record held by Murdie Carmichael and Mark Risbridger. Pars at thirteen and fourteen meant he was still on track. Urban myth will suggest that Paul mentioned Alistair Darling on the fifteenth tee and Al took it the wrong way, but a double bogey ensued anyway and it would have required an exceptional last three holes to secure a course record. Level par would be the order of the day and a terrific round of 64 was the final outcome and equalled the season's best round of Andy Jamieson. A fine run at a difficult target. When Andy had his 64 he required 3 birdies in his last four holes whereas Al only required one out of his last four.

  • If only Alistair could have swapped his last four holes from the Wednesday which were 4,3,3,4!
Between the three of them on Saturday afternoon, their better ball was 58!

  • The race for the Robert Spence trophy has also got a tad more interesting as well.

  • Can I also squash the rumours that the sweep entry money is going up by 50% from next Friday morning and that any winnings will need to be used at a neighbouring golf club. Totally unfounded

Lyle Medal 2014

The Lyle Medal, a longstanding major within the club, came to a conclusion on Saturday.
Most of the contenders were keeping an eye out to see if Mark Mitchell could add a second score to his net 62 of Spring. Unfortunately, Mark could not improve on his net 73 and would finish in joint second place along with another five members.

Having rejoined the club after a number of years absence, Stephen McVey, knows the significance of the competition and was looking to add to his 69 of the Summer. With an up and down front nine which appeared to take him out of the running, Stephen, settled down and got to the seventeenth tee needing to complete the two holes in one over for an eventual tie. 2 Bogeys would make him runner up number 2.

Both Jim Fulton and Dugald Carmichael had already posted 135. Dugald was required to improve on his previous net 68 by a shot. Again, this was not to be.

Jim had a slightly easier target of a net 70 to deal with. Unfortunately, Jim chose last Saturday to have his poorest front nine of the whole year and the fourth challenger fell away.

Jim Fleming was next up. With a first round score of 67, Jim required another for a tie. Thirteen handicapper, Jim, was out in forty strokes to put himself well into the frame. Somewhere along the back nine, however, he would need a few pars. Jim, as with Stephen McVey, found himself on seventeen, but this time needing two pars to win. 2 bogeys meant he was the next to finish one shot behind.

David MacFarlane, who was looking to be the first person in the club's history to have his name on the Lyle Medal board as a three times winner, would also stand on the seventeenth tee requiring two pars to win outright. He could take a bogey and a par and win on the countback. David contrived to take two bogeys and would become the sixth and final player to lose out by a single shot.

The winner of this year's Lyle Medal is James Glover. In April 2011, James' handicap was 24. On Saturday, before going out, it was 9.5 which is a brilliant improvement in such a short period. Almost on a par with Alan Rodgers and Ian Doak! A net 72 would spoil a great day for James as he went up to a handicap of 10, but, all in all, the winning of one of our majors is just reward for all the hard work he puts into his game and am sure he will get back to single figures shortly.

From Saturday's competition we also completed the final places for the Kinnaird Trophy, held this coming week. John Leslie, Paul Mitchell, Stephen McVey and Allan Scott will join the other Saturday medalists for this prestigious competition.

Last Friday Gordon Cameron and Iain Jones teamed up to represent the club in the Belhaven / SGU event at East Renfrewshire. This is the first time we have managed to dispatch a partnership to this sponsored competition with golfers who were more interested in the golf rather than the grub and drink. Finally, we have a pair who have quailified from a field of 75, to go on to the Grand Final in a couple of weeks.

  • HG McLennan Round 2 & Captains Trophy - Saturday 16 August 2014

    CSS:71, Entries:120

With Kenny Roy, Paolo Spella and Roger Sykes attempts to win the HG McLennan hitting the skids faster than a frivolous Legia Warsaw appeal, it was really only left to Graham Hunter and Gordon McTavish to contest the competition.

At the start of play there was only a shot between the two players at the top of the leaderboard, with Graham on 64 and Gordon on 65.

Big Gordon would start his round with a six and Graham a four. This effectively meant that Gordon's three shot handicap advantage was eliminated and they were lying the same. Incredibly, after the front nine they were still locked together on the same total, taking into account the handicap differential. A three at ten from Gordon would be offset by the same from Graham at thirteen and ,again, they would be neck and neck. The next two holes would be crucial, with Graham having a double bogey at each against Gordon's bogeys. Pars for both on sixteen gave Gordon  a two shot lead. A good four at seventeen from Graham at least gave him a chance as Gordon had a bogey. However, matching bogeys at eighteen meant that Gordon would win his first ever trophy at the club without the aid of Paolo Spella as his previous two wins were in the Captain's Foursomes.

Winner - Gordon McTavish (65+69=134), Runner Up - Graham Hunter (64+71=135)

Whilst all this was going on, the Captains Trophy was also being contended for. Interestingly the protagonists all came from section one.

After a front nine of forty, six handicapper, Mark Cannon was totally out the picture. With eight straight pars in a row and attempting to win a second Captain's trophy, Stevie Lapsley would bogey the ninth for a one over par and be well in contention. Somehow or other, Craig Thomson's handicap has drifted up to two this season and he would be well pleased with the condition of the course when he shot a thirty three out. The Captain's trophy was probably the last thing on his mind at this point.

Mark managed to get off the bogey trail of the front nine and would score a very good back nine of one over par to register a net sixty eight.

Stevie on the other hand went off the boil in the back nine, probably due to being intimidated by being in the exalted company of the Lord of the Splash, and came back in a disappointing thirty seven strokes. He would join Mark on net sixty eight.

Considering the weather and also the fact that the CSS would go up to 71 for the umpteenth time this season, Craig can still be extremely happy in coming home in two over par for a net sixty six. If we agree that the competition ended up between the three players, Craig would have had a square game against the other twos better ball, which is no mean feat.

Craig has won numerous scratch competitions within the club and he is probably the lowest handicapped player to win a handicap strokeplay event when he won the Centenary Quaich off a handicap of one a couple of years ago, but this year's victory is exceptional again.

    Winner - Craig Thomson - 66, Runner Up - Mark Cannon - 68.

As a point of interest, having banged the drum for Andy Jamieson over the last month, Andy actually won the club championship at the Earl of Mar Hall GC on Sunday. Well done.

    H G McLennan Round 1- Saturday 9 August 2014

On Saturday we held the annual two round event that is the HG McLennan Trophy. This competition obviously stirs the imagination of the members as we had one of the largest turnouts of the year. It is always a boost if you can record a score which makes you feel that there is still a chance the following Saturday.  There are fifteen players within 4 shots of the lead and they will fancy their chances of overturning the relevant lead.

Those players who are on 68 include some dangerous golfers in Paolo Spella and Alex Roy in particular who could back this score up with another in the mid sixties to put the leader under pressure. Alex is actually still in three matchplay competitions at semi final stages at least so must be doing something right.

On 67 are Roger Sykes , who has just won his second monthly medal of his season, which is quite rare for a player of his handicap. Perhaps it might be a bit too much to expect another great round. Ross McWilliams could very easily improve on his 67 and set a decent target as his back nine of three over par will testify. The main contender out of this group is the on fire Andy Jamieson. Andy, on current form, will probably not score any higher than 69 and this sort of two round total would be excellent.

Kenny Roy will be absolutely fuming at letting slip a superb opportunity of being the outright leader after round one. A finish of four over par for his last four holes spoiled what was looking like his best score for the year. He will still have his eye on a bit of silverware, though.

Big Haggis McTavish, just back from holiday, dusted down his John Letters blades and had his most consistent round for many a year. A back nine of four over which included four threes meant a net 65. Just to prove it was no isolated round he went on to beat Iain Jones in the quarter finals of the Challenge Cup a few days later. The big man is turning back the clock to when he was a main contender for that trophy.

All these players are bearing down on Graham Hunter. It is really good to see Graham returning the score he did. Off a handicap of eleven he went out in one over par and was still there after ten holes. Andy White was totally gobsmacked at this stage. Three over after fourteen holes was superb. The regulation bogey came at fifteen to be followed by a par at sixteen. Two bogeys at the last couple of holes would not detract from a terrific round of golf.

Can Graham keep his nerve? That remains to be seen as many have been the frontrunner in the past and could not handle the pressure. We will wait with interest.

Greenock Golf Club Championship 2014

Greenock GC recently held their 87th club championship and an extremely interesting one it turned out to be.

Qualification for the matchplay games comes from a two round strokeplay event, which in itself carries a huge deal of prestige with the winner being presented with the Syd Montford Trophy (Arthur's faither, in case you dont know). After the first round, where the weather was particularly poor, the joint favourites were Paul Mitchell and David MacFarlane with excellent 69s. Jack Currie was next best on 70 and Andy Jamieson shot a 71. After these four, the scoring reflected the conditions.

On week two Paul Mitchell scored a 78 and David MacFarlane shot a 75. Jack took a 77. This week the players had to cope with even poorer weather. However, winning the trophy for the third year in a row and the fourth time overall was Andy Jamieson with a 143 total.

Andy had obviously been putting in a huge amount of practice and it was definitely paying off. Over the next four weeks he would reduce his handicap from 1.9 down to -0.1 to become the best player, by handicap, in the club. He was immediately installed as favourite for the championship itself.

When the draw was made for the matchplay stages much interest focused on who was not there, as much as who had qualified. Due to a number of personal reasons there was no Crawford Rae, Murdie Carmichael, Alistair Roy, Jack Currie or Paul Dorrian, all of whom might have been worthy of a decent run.

However, the draw did throw up an excellent set of contenders, many who were making their debut and others who had done it all before.

Congratulations must go to Steven Orr, Alan Young and Ian Doak, who were making their first appearance in these rounds and were delighted to add this achievement to their resume. Ian, in fact, took a good scalp in Stevie Gordon and reached the second stage.

The draw was well balanced and the stand out game in the top half was between previous winner Kenny Roy and holder Cameron Jones. In a really cagey match Cameron got his nose in front and won by 1 up. Onlookers would be heard commenting that it was good to see young Cameron putting up a good defence of his title.

In the bottom half Andy Jamieson took on four times winner, Craig Thomson. Andy's form continued into this match and he would go on to defeat Craig comprehensively on the 13th green and remove one of his main contenders.
In a repeat of a previous game a couple of years ago, we found Jimmy McAulay up against his son Chris. This is a difficult scenario for any father. It does not matter whether it is Monopoly, ping pong, keepie uppie, the problem is how to lose without the son knowing you were actually not trying. Jimmy managed to put up a good argument about how he should have won, but it cut no ice. Chris prevailed again at the final hole.

There were good wins also for Graeme McLellan (Alan Young), Paul Mitchell (Steven Orr), Calum Gallagher (Riccardo Di Murro) and David MacFarlane (Brendan Harley).

In the quarter finals Cameron took on a previous finalist in Graeme McLellan in an exact repeat of last years quarter finals and won reasonably comfortably. A stout defence was now the latest comment.

Paul Mitchell played Calum Gallagher and was seven up at one point. A rocket from the vice captain was enough to galvanise Calum and he brought the game back to all square after seventeen holes. Unbelievably, Paul managed to recover from this and played the eighteenth in superb fashion to turn a potential defeat into a victory.
David MacFarlane would overcome Ian Doak, who was delighted to reach the heady heights of the quarters, to get to the semi finals.

Andy Jamieson would show no remorse against Chris McAulay in the final match and he would win comfortably. Just over twenty holes had been needed to reach his semi final.

In the semi finals Cameron would be matched up against big hitting Paul Mitchell. If Paul could keep the ball in play, the consensus was that he might just pip the holder. Not to be. Cameron's deadly short game would prove vital and a victory ensured that his defence was becoming even more remarkable.

The other semi final pitched up David MacFarlane against Andy Jamieson. Many of the pudits reckoned this was the final before the final. Andy opened the game up by carving his tee shot at the first into Raymond Barr's garden and never seemed to settle down after this. Finding Ian McDermid in the burn was a bit of a shock to him! The steadier play of David MacFarlane meant that he would feature in his third final, the previous two in 1998 (Crawford Rae) and 2002 (Murdie Carmichael).

On the morning of the final, the two contenders were presented with really bad weather and it was obvious that their concentration and patience would be tested as well as golfing prowess.

David MacFarlane opened the proceedings up, with a birdie at the first hole and perhaps those watching might have thought that this was to be his year. Holes were exchanged up until the mid way point of the round when Cameron put together a magnificent run of threes which would see him open up a four up lead after 15 holes. He would retain this until lunchtime.

The second eighteen holes started in a similar fashion to the first in that David MacFarlane would immediately get a birdie to start to eat into Cameron's lead. By the time the 8th hole came round he was only one down and the resilience of Cameron was being put to the test.

By the time they reached their 31st hole the game was all square. As is his right, Cameron has played at number one for the team in all their matches and his game has been tested in the heat of battle by the best players in the County and this experience might just have been crucial. He did not seem to panic at this comeback. With the rain now pouring down, the course was in great danger of flooding and conditions were particularly difficult, albeit equally for both players. With Cameron safely on the 13th green and David only managing to get on in two shots, the biggest discussion was to whether the match should continue. It was obvious the the player in the ascendancy would always want to continue and vice versa. The refereeing skills of the official was put under strain and he decided that there was a way into the hole and that the match should continue. A superb putt from David would see the hole halved and the match remained all square.

At the fourteenth, David misjudged his approached and his ball actually bounced off  a saturated green and over the back. Cameron knocked his second shot into the heart of the green. His two putts would mean a one up lead with only four holes to play.

Cameron teed off at the fifteenth and his shot was fortunate not to reach the ditch at the right. It rested in very wet rough and he could only knock it back into play, some eighty or so yards from the hole. David's shot would come up a few feet short of the green, but he would knock his chip stiff. Cameron was presented with a putt of around twenty feet to remain one up. If he is known for anything it is his great ability around the greens and it was no real surprise when he holed what arguably may have been the most important stroke in the whole competition in that he retained his one up buffer.

Regulation threes on sixteen meant a one up situation for Cameron. He had been in this exact same position a year earlier, when he birdied the hole, to win his championship so he had the advantage of that experience. A great deal of thought went into the tee shots at seventeen. Cameron, probably affected by his shot on fifteen, eventually chose to take a rescue club, meaning that he gave up on distance but took the danger of the bushes on the right hand side out of play. A marvellous shot landed right beside the marker which denotes 200 yards to the green. David seemed to be influenced by this and returned his driver to his bag and then took a three wood. His tee shot would end up in the small plantation of trees down the left, from where he could only knock the ball out just short of the pond.

Standing right beside the distance marker and with a six iron, in wet conditions, Cameron would play a magnificent towering shot which never left the pin to deliver the coup de grace. The ball landed a few feet on the green and rolled up just beside the hole. A tremendous shot which we can all try, the next time we play the seventeenth. This shot seemed to bring a tear to the eye of his dad or it might just have been a bit of sleep he was rubbing away.
David MacFarlane was very gracious in his speech afterwards in praising a young man who many thought might have had his day in the sun.

Cameron proved that his victory the previous year was no flash in the pan and this year's win is probably all the sweeter in that he now falls into a small group of eight players who have retained the trophy. He now has the record for being the youngest ever winner and also the second youngest ever winner.

Whinhill Seniors Qualifier - Saturday 21 June 2014

With the weather taking a turn for the better, Saturday saw a superb turnout for this year's Whinhill Trophy qualifier. As the demographics of the club changes, then so does the number of members who qualify for this over 55 event.

One player who does not come into that category as yet is Hughie Lyden. Hughie had probably one of his best ever rounds in racking up 8 pars and a birdie in his round of 78, which resulted in a net 63.

The "randomised" draw for the knockout rounds came up with some interesting ties.
First out the hat was Robert Campbell who takes on El Capitano. It has probably been a number of years since Robert took part in any matchplay competitions and will hope to see Captain Jim off before the dreaded burn on 18 is reached. Think this could go all the way but Robert will fall at the final hole even though his opponent has a very porous putting stroke and is weak on the greens.

A tricky one to call is the match between Gordon Parker and Dave Terrey.  Gordon never seems to travel too well in these type of events and is up against a matchplay specialist in Dave who is a former Challenge Cup winner in 1971 and is still involved in the same event this year. Dave, who got to the final of the Whinhill a couple of years ago has too much head to head experience for Gordon.

Normally, when you have a handicap in the mid twenties you would expect to receive a few shots to assist in a tie. Not this game, however. There will only be a shot or two difference when David Anderson takes on Matt Stewart. Difficult to predict but Matt has shown the better form over the past few years and he should progress against the less experienced player.

Robin Goodall, who is trying to become the only person in the history of the club to win back to back Lyle medals takes on the supreme senior in the club, in Ian McDermid. Ian has never actually won the Whinhill Trophy and that is strange in that "Once a Whinny man, always a Whinny man" would relish doing so. Previous winner,Robin, will confine Ian's ambitions to the bin for another year.

Allan McDonald can look on his task against Charlie Marner with confidence. Charlie, whose major golfing achievement is for getting his photo onto the club website more than Martin Kane, will fall at the first hurdle.
Congratulations go to Jim Kerr in winning the Laurie Trophy for the first time and his reward is a game against Big Donny. These two old winter league protagonists will serve up a good game but Jim will romp home. Remember my MOT is due next month, mate.

Another winter league pairing throws up former club championship finalist in Alan Wylie against a player who actually won this competition back in pre millenium days of 1998 in Donald Petrie. He receives a good number of strokes but, Alan, is still a formidable opponent and Donald will bow out gracefully.

The last game features Nicol McCloy against William Crawford. Nicol's handicap has crept up over the past couple of years and William's has dropped a few shots and this will make it a difficult task against Nicol, but think that William will come through this game.

As regards an outright winner, perhaps it could be Jim Orr? That would be like a Gers supporter waking up to the gift that keeps giving in Charles Green. Not good news.
No, we believe that Jim Kerr is the favourite for this accolade.

    Wednesday Sweep - Wednesday 11 June 2014

If anyone can help out, then Donald Petrie, who generally qualifies might be struggling this time around. Playing the fifth hole very strategically and also smartly, I might add, Donald took a five iron off the tee. Upon striking the ball he was left with the tail end of the shaft and neither ball nor club head nor remainder of shaft were ever seen again. As a matter of fact, Donald himself appeared to get lost later on, having gone back up to look for this Ping Eye 1, circa 1978, family heirloom! Please watch out for it.

Saturday 7 June 2014 - Turner Quaich & Seniors Qualifier

Even though we had a particularly poor day weatherwise we may have ended up with one of the best fields in the fourteen year history of the Seniors Championship. It is a real credit to the players who were caught out later in the day in battling round (and sometimes clearing the greens of water). Ian McDermid was actually doing it for the games coming along behind him. and, if anyone has ever tried this, it is really tiring. He still managed to coast into the qualifiers.

The Turner Quaich was played for on Saturday, also, and another person who deserves unstinting praise is Dennis McKelvie. Dennis volunteered to help the greenstaff out in clearing a few burns on the course of any debris. You would think this would have taken a toll. No Dennis actually was the only player from the third section to qualify for the Championship and, into the bargain, his net 68 won the Turner Quaich. Superb! Jackie Norman was the runner up with a particularly good 69.

The draw, performed by Charlie Paul, was made for the Championship and it included every past winner with the exception of Ian McFadyen. The dates are quite aggressive but we have already lost some time with the weather and we are up against a definite final on Saturday July 27.

First out of the hat was first time qualifier in Charlie Marner and he will take on a person determined to get his name on the trophy and officially sanction it as a "Major" in doing so. Martin Kane dreams of a photocall alongside this silverware and Charlie will enjoy the company if not the result.

Gordon McFarlane had a really good Saturday. Not only did he comfortably qualify he also got a bit of business in getting the job in repairing the 2 cars which were involved in a bit of damage in the car park. On a high, Gordon strode up to the first tee and returned a scratch 77, making him the leading qualifier. His reward is a game against Nicol McCloy. Nicol will be upping his practice sessions no doubt and will be a tough opponent, but, something tells me Gordon might just sneak this one.

Has John Houston ever really recovered from the drubbing handed out by Jim Gallagher a few years ago? Is he still mentally scarred? Jim Kerr is the player most folk wanted to avoid as he is very steady and would like to get Raymond on his bag in a final for a change. In a really tough one to call John will just sneak it.

There are a good few players who will fancy getting their hands on the trophy for the first time and Alec Cloudsley is one of them. In the marquee match of round one he is up against a former winner in Alan Young. This is so hard to predict but will go for the player who had the better qualifying score in Alan Young.

Dennis' reward, if we call it that, is a game against the current holder in Alan Hulme. Dennis will put up a brave fight and congratulate himself on qualifying for another year.

The next game out the hat sees two players who blow absolutely hot and cold. Both their handicaps are on the rise even thought hey both play regularly. Kenny Piper and JHD present another quandary as regards selecting a winner. Big Jim has never featured heavily in the event and this makes the choice easy. Kenny Piper.

Jim Gallagher has qualified yet again and I am sure he will thank Charlie Paul for making a draw which pits hims against five times winner in Ian McDermid. There is always an upset in all sporting events, but this will not be one of them.

    Provost Trophy - Saturday 24 May 2014

Saturday eventually saw one of the highlight competitions of the year starting its progress. The Provost Trophy, with its qualifying round followed by matchplay stages, can reinvigorate the season to those who have not started off too well. The cut off point for qualification was 66. The so-called draw took place, rather appropriately, whilst watching Britain's Got Talent in a manner which would make Billy McNeill look like a superstar.

A quick scan of the matches immediately suggested the instant demise of a number of teams. The first game out sees Jim Fulton and Alan Young taking on Jim McNeil and Ben McGhee. This is not a match to quicken the pulses and the old hands of Fulton and Young should take care of Jim and Ben, whose performance will determine the winning team.

A really interesting match sees Stuart Gallacher and Kenny Piper up against Stuart Alexander and Iain Jones. The two Stuarts should nullify each other. A match taking place using their cards from Saturday had them all square after 16 and the finish of 3,3,4 from Iain Jones meant a one up victory. I will go with that as the first round result.
Game three is another which is extremely close to call. The reigning champs, and also the winners of the Captains Foursomes for the past two seasons, have again qualified. Gerry Donnachie and John Burns find themselves up against Charlie McDowell and Graham McIntyre, with both teams getting through with 65s. This fantastic run has to stop at some time, but somehow do not think it will be in this round.

The marquee match of the matchplay games is Craig Thomson and Mark McCaig against the Als, Roy and Robertson. This is genuinely difficult to predict. If Mark can remember that the trophy was donated by the Greenock provost, away back in time, and keep his tees shots somewhere within the boundaries of the town, then this might be the factor. Thomson and McCaig seem the hungrier team as opposed to the thirstier one, so go with them.
Davie Bruce and Tommy McShane put on a superb back nine of 30 to come through the qualifying. This sees them taking on Frank Molloy and John Stark. Unlike the game of thrones struggle for power, John Stark will not be defeated in the first series.

Joint leading qualifiers Adam Brown, who lost five strokes in the handicap allocation but still managed to be the counting player on eleven holes, and David Carney are rewarded for their efforts with a game against Alex Roy and Pat Tinney. Alex and Pat were absolutely out of contention having run up a net five at both 7 & 8and were off the screen after the tenth hole with another net 5. However, they put together a great run of net five under par for their next eight holes to come in on 66. Again, and it is a surprise, their match played using their scores from Saturday of 61 against 66 ends up all square in matchplay. We go for Pat and Alex.

The next game up is Steven Lapsley and Mark McDaid against Gordon McFarlane and Robert Leith. There are two factors which make Gordon and Robert the favourites. One is the early form of Gordon and the other is the time both teams put in on the golf course.

The other leading qualifier on 61 is John Gunn and Alistair Campbell. Their so-called reward for their efforts is to be pitted against Mark Scanlan and Steven Mullan. In the 3/4 matchplay round Alistair will be losing quite a few strokes and thismight be crucial against really consistent opponents and they may need to find another five birdies to offset that. I go for Mark and Steven to progress and see no reason for them not to reach their first final along the way where they will meet Craig Thomson and Mark McCaig.

    Crawford Bogey - Saturday 19 April 2014

Finally we got a decent spell of weather, without any rain, and this was reflected in over 150 members turning up to play in the Crawford Bogey. Interestingly, this number was only surpassed last year on half a dozen occasions. Some green shoots of membership recovery we hope.

Alistair Livingstone, who has started the season well, was the first of many players who might have had a chance. 37 out meant he was 1 up on the course at the turn. A back nine which featured bogeys at the three par threes would mean a final tally of 1 down.

Graeme McLellan got to the turn 2 down and probably thought he was too far behind, but a run of two under par for his next seven holes would put him on the seventeenth tee 1 up. A bogey, bogey finish meant that he returned 1 down as well. Brendan has been enlisted for pitching lessons!

Gordon McTavish would demonstrate the unique nature of a Bogey competition. Fifteen handicapper, Haggis, would go to the turn in forty seven blows, but would only be 1 down to the course. A terrific back nine of 39 of thirty nine was converted into an overall score of all square.

Jim Fulton was the next player to be only one down at the turn. Jim would only lose one hole in his back nine and come home all square with the course.

Paul Alford (anyone have his e mail address?) got to the turn level and a great run would put him 3 up on the course after 14 holes. This was the second best anyone got at any time during the competition. However, sevens at both the fifteenth and eighteenth would drop him to a still creditable one up.

Thirteen handicapper, Ross McWilliams, went to the turn in forty five and this included a nine at the third. At what point was he going to concede the hole we wonder? Ross could not turn this into a winning position and finished one up as well, having halved the final five holes.

There is no scratch score competition as it is a Bogey event, but Brendan Harley must have been close to it. One over par for the front nine was one up. Brendan would eventually miss out on silverware by one and will rue a back nine which had seven pars and two bogeys and these came at ten and sixteen! His net sixty six will be rewarded with a small cut.

Three players managed to return home with a score of two up on the course. Alex Irving had a tremendous front nine where he would get to four up after eight holes. A six at the ninth still put him in a great position which he maintained until the last six holes where he would eventually surrender a couple of holes to finish 2 up.

Charles McGartland had an excellent net score off his twenty one handicap. Using his shots well he got to the turn in forty four to be one up. He would strengthen his position with another good back nine of one up and draw level with Alex, but be better placed as regards countback.

The winner of the event was Joe Ball. Joe actually did not score at three holes over the round but showed experience as to how this competition should be played. Joe was level after nine holes and would manage his handicap to good effect over the last few holes and will be pleased with the net birdie at the last which would mean he won the Crawford Bogey for the second time, 2007 being the first, on the countback. It was exactly a year ago that Joe and Donald Petrie won the Navy Cup so he must enjoy the Spring conditions. Its good to see him back competing, but I dont think they will handle the pressure of being defending champions, so they should just enjoy the walk next Saturday.

    2 Man Texas Scramble - Saturday 29 March 2014

With a different format for the club, it was always going to be interesting to predict what the winning score might be. A generous handicap allowance meant that everyone would have a reasonable opportunity and it would transpire that there was no real gauge as to what would be the calibre of the winning team.

Crawford Rae and David MacFarlane came home with 62.5 and Craig Thomson and Mark McCaig would only just better that with a 61. In the middle range of handicaps Eddie Spence and Stevie McCafferty would have a 60 as would Davie Docherty and Jim Maxwell.

New members, emigrating from "The Port", are Scott Archdeacon and David Findlay, but they would discover their new surroundings a bit too tough and would return a 66.5.

Perhaps it took a middle of the road along with a low man. Pat Tinney and Graeme McLellan must have thought they were in with a chance with a really good 58.5.

Finally, when the dust settled,it seemed that the best team should have the benefit of a higher handicap to fall back upon. Hughie Lyden joined forces with soon to be assistant pro, Stevie Wilson, to record another 58.
Unlucky to lose out in a countback were Frank McCormick and Al Livingstone with their 57. They will regret a five at fourteen.

So, using the formula of at least one high man were all three winning sweepstake teams. In third place was Frank Molloy and Eck's sixteen strokes and they would come in with 57. In second place was Kenny Parker allied with 28 man Jim Kerrigan. Their 56.5 was commendable.

In first place , however, and taking the formula to another extreme were David Anderson off 23 and Donald Petrie off 26. They used their strokes really well and took advantage of David's tee game and Donald's well honed and renowned chipping skills. They blew the field away with a tremendous 52.5 which featured a front nine of 39 and a very good back nine of 38. Excellent considering their handicaps. well done to them both.

    4 Man Strokeplay - Sat 22 March 2014

Well, after a very long wait of many years, the "Dream Team" has eventually came good. With three scores counting from each hole, the format was exceptionally tough. After the front nine, we had an outright leading team of Jim Orr, Alex Jasper, John Stark and Frank Molloy which would have been too much to bear if they won again.

Their 97 would be five shots clear of the eventual winners. However, the self appointed M & H convenor was taking no chances at this point. The prayer mat was out,  pins were being stuck in wee dolls and, if he had one, he would have sold his soul to ensure anyone else would win. Little did he realise who it would be.

A fantastic back nine from Crawford Rae, Mark McCaig, Craig Thomson and David MacFarlane blew away the field. Their 93 was 8 strokes better than anyone else.

This week we will attempt something new (always a recipe for disaster!) and have a 2 man Texas Scramble. In order to give a different set of players a chance, their will be full handicap allowance. Over the course of the round players must have 2 counting tee shots in the first 6 holes, in the middle six and also in the last six.

    Saturday 1 March 2014 - 4 Man Team Strokeplay

Just how badly can a season start? What am I on about. Is it the weather? Nope, that was good. How about the "No returns"?. Nope. Donny and Ian never return a card, so have gave up on that.
No, its the idea that the first game out can take the competition by the scruff of the neck and lead from wire to wire.

Anyway, an excellent turnout of over 130 members, which was an improvement in the number playing last year, were delighted to get any sort of a game considering the rainfall over the week.

The race for the first winning post of the year was between seven teams and they were all tightly packed after fourteen holes.

The dream team of Crawford Rae, David MacFarlane, Mark McCaig and Craig Thomson had the whole event in their grasp having taken ninety five strokes up until the fifteenth tee, which was a lead of three shots. They would somehow contrive to go on a run of 11, 6, 9, 7 and end up on 128, five shots off the leaders.

Having unceremoniously dumped Raymond, Jim Kerr sneaked in with the big boys of the Roys. Ninety six after the fourteen hole mark should have been the platform for a charge. However, last years runners up, but with a different "Non Roy" they were possibly carrying a bit of dead weight and their final four would be 8, 6, 7 and a poor 10 for a 128 finish.

Next to have a go were Ian Doak, Jim Fleming, Derek Leitch and Davie Robertson. The leaders at the turn with a brilliant 60, they just could not handle the lack of oxygen and would take a ten at fourteen but they were still in the hunt on ninety nine. Their last four holes would be a reasonable  7, 6, 6, 8, but would only mean a tie for third slot on 126 and they would lose out on the countback for a sweepstake place.

Also ending up outside the money were David Carney, Gordon McFarlane, Stevie Orr and Robert Leith. Ninety nine after fourteen, they would complete their round with another decent run of 7, 6, 6, 8 and end up on 126 in fourth place.

Joint leaders after fourteen were Stevie Cameron, Kenny Parker, Bob Hughes and Jim Kerrigan. Their last four holes showed up as 8, 4, 8, 8 and would also result in 126, but would slip into third place by virtue of the best back nine.
The runners up of Neil Delussey, Scott Young, John Burns and Jeff Mitchell were the poorest of the named groups after fourteen, having arrived with 101. A very good 7 ,5, 5, 6 must have looked really tidy when they completed their round as it added up to 124. Not to be.

Out first, the team of Jim Orr, Alex Jasper, John Stark and Stevie Wilson raced to the fourteenth hole in 1 hour and 22 mins and recorded 98 blows. Their score of nine at fifteen was not what they were looking for, but, unbelievably and incredibly, Starkie, switching his phone to silent mode, got a two at 16 and a three net two at seventeen and a par at the last. This meant a finish of 4, 5, 7 for the team and a winning score of 123.

The self appointed M & H convenor has studied the contenders' cards for something which they may have missed and I know there are guys within those teams who probably dont believe that he would ever campaign on their behalf, but, on this occasion, its true. He was absolutely desperate. To no avail.

Every punctuation mark, every comma, full stop, handicap. Everything has been gone over carefully, but it seems we have a winning team.

    Things can only get better!
