Due to incessant rain last Thursday, the new date for the October medal is Thursday, 6th October.

Friday, 16th September 2016

After Monday's deluge, it was wonderful to have a beautiful sunny day for our last Greenlees game of the season, a rescheduled match away at Cawder Golf Club.

With the sun shining, and with a slight breeze, it was a lovely day to be golfing although there was a wee hint of Autumn in the air with the trees starting to turn their beautiful Autumnal shades.

Afterwards, Dorothy Donaldson invited all the players back to her house for "apres golf" and we all had a wonderful time. Many thanks to Dorothy for the very warm and kind hospitality.

The final score in the match was Cawder 8 - Greenock 1

Today we made a second attempt to play our Greenlees home match against Prestwick St Nicholas.

The first match was postponed in July due to heavy rain flooding the greens just before tee off.

Today's forecast was ominous with rain, wind......and more rain forecast from noon onwards. It wasn't too bad when the first games teed off...the first 5 holes are sheltered. Things just got worse however as the leading groups headed up to the higher parts of the course. Up at "the loop" it was becoming difficult to swing the club. Teeing off at the 10th was a nightmare.

Up to this point, the greens were holding up well, but with the rain became more persistent, the 12th and 13th greens were starting to flood. At the 14th the green was rapidly looking like a duck pond......and eventually it was impossible to putt out.

The game was abandoned much to everyone's relief and everyone headed to the warmth of the Clubhouse.

Soon the locker room was awash with wet golfers!

We played a Friendly match away at Ranfurly Castle today.

The course was very difficult with the greens short and fast, and the pins in Championship positons.

The wind got up in the afternoon and the rough was very difficult but the sun shone all afternoon.

Ranfurly Castle won the match 3&2.

An Autumnal feel was in the air today at our home Greenless match against Cowglen Golf Club.

The forecast was good but cloudy skies and a strong breeze made golfing quite a challenge.

Rain....Rain....Rain......that was the forecast today for our away Greenlees match at Hilton Park Golf Club.

Unfortunately, the forecast was correct and it rained from the very first match and kept raining.

Despite the weather the course was in great condition with the greens very fast, but the rain did make the course very long with no run to speak off. Dumgoyne Hill in the distance was shrouded in mist, and the lovely views were not seen today.

The result was Hilton Park 7 - Greenock 2.

Today was St Swinthin's Day and despite a terrible weather forecast, the Greenless team headed to Cawder to play their Greenless match.

Unfortunately, the forecast was correct and with the rains becoming heavier around lunchtime, and with the course and greens starting to flood, the decision was taking to postpone the match.

The new date to play the match is Friday, 16th September.

Let's hope it doesn't rain for the next 40 days and 40 nights.

The Captain's Flag Day was held today and Morag our Captain held a delightful afternoon tea for several of our long standing and past lady members of the club. Everyone enjoyed catching up and the mouth watering selection of baking made by members of the Ladies committee made the the afternoon tea a very special occasion.

By the time the first games teed off in the competition, the skies had brightened and it had become very humid, but very pleasant for golf. Despite torrential overnight rain, the golf was in a marvellous condition with the greens in great shape.

The overall winner was Dorothy Fisher who finished down the 18th fairway with her drive. The runner up was Linda McDougall who finished at the 17th hole.

The Greenless team headed south to Lanark Golf Club today for their next match.

It was sunny skies leaving Greenock but the cloud increased as we headed inland and when we arrived at Lanark, it was very overcast. However for most of the afternoon the conditions were very pleasant - we had a couple of heavy showers but they didn't last long.

The final score was Lanark 8.5 - Greenock 0.5

Our Ladies Open Day was held today and what a gorgeous, hot summer day we had.

36 ladies took to the fairways and with the format a Greensome Stableford, some wonderful scores were returned. The course and greens looked wonderful and everyone enjoyed playing the course and admiring the breathaking scenic views across the Clyde.

Many thanks to our main sponsor Archie Jess and to everyone who sponsored holes and donated raffle prizes. The raffle raised a wonderful sum of £400, the proceeds of which will be presented to Inverclyde Active Schools, Special Needs in Mainstream Primary.

The Greenless team travelled to Eastwood today for our second match of the season

The weather was dry but blustery and the later matches got some light rain.

Greenock put up a good fight on an away course with Eastwood winning 6 - 3 (Greenock winning two matches and halving two).

After the snow 12 days ago, summer arrived this week and just in nice time for our first Greenlees match of the season with a home game against East Renfrewshire.

Cropped trousers and sleeveless shirts were needed as it became very hot in the first few holes. Higher up the course the wind blew and got stronger as the afternoon went on and this made for very challenging golf.

In a tight match, Greenock ran out the winners.

The final result was Greenock 5 - East Renfrewshire 4.

To welcome the start of the 2016 season, we held a very enjoyable Drinks Night at the Clubhouse last night.

The Greenock Ladies Mail on Sunday team played their first tie of the 2016 competition today. Having received a bye in the first round, the team travelled to Cawder Golf Club.

The team consisted of Linda McDougall, Dorothy Fisher, Sandra Macdougall, Liz McConnachie and Morag Connelly.

With the wettest winter on record, the course was understandably playing long, but for once, the skies above remained blue, and the sun shone all day, although a brisk North wind made if feel decidedly chilly.

Unfortunately the Greenock team lost the match with the final score, Cawder 3 - Greenock 2.
