Back in May our first Greenlees match of the season against Eastwood was abandoned due to flooding on the greens. Today we held the rescheduled match.

Despite a dry start, squally showers soon started which were on and off all afternoon..... along with the waterproofs. A brisk NW wind meant there was a slight autumnal chill in the air, although in sheltered parts of the course it felt rather humid.

This was the last Greenlees match of the season and unfortunately we finished with a Greenock defeat.

The final score Greenock 3.5 - Eastwood 5.5

On a bright and breezy Tuesday afternoon,  Greenock travelled to Skelmorlie to contest the Riddell Trophy.

6 ladies from Greenock were matched with a strong Skelmorlie team, who were defending the trophy they had won at Greenock last year. The matches were played as a greensome and were played in a very friendly spirit with Skelmorlie taking advantage of their local knowledge on their home course and winning 2 1/2 to 1/2.

The afternoon was rounded off with a delicious afternoon tea and everyone enjoyed the lively chat at the nineteenth.

Our penultimate Greenlees game of the season was held today with a home match against Lenzie Golf Club.

Despite a wet start to the day, the morning soon brightened up and by lunchtime it had turned into a very pleasant day. Strengthening winds throughout the afternoon made club selection difficult. When the sun came out in the late afternoon it felt like a beautiful summers day.

The final score was Greenock 3.5 Lenzie 5.5.

The Mail On Sunday team headed eastwards in the late afternoon to play their 7th round match away at Falkirk Tryst Golf Club. With Greenock being only 1 of 6 Scottish teams left in the competition, the match was eagerly anticipated by both teams.

As the first game teed off, the clouds darkened, and torrential rain poured down..........and for a good 40 minutes it just poured. Greens were flooding, which for this golf course was very unusual. Eventually the rain did go off, and the sun did come out. It was never cold but it was humid. Cloudy skies made for a darker evening overhead, and the light was starting to fade around 8pm.

Despite a valiant attempt by the Greenock team, the overall score resembled the dreich and gloomy skies.

The final score was Falkirk Tryst 5 - Greenock 0.

Despite this loss, this was the furthest the Ladies team had ever reached in the Mail on Sunday competition. Well done to everyone who played in the team and for reaching the 7th round.

Today was Finals Day at the Club.

The Ladies final was between the defending champion Linda McDougall and Dorothy Fisher. Conditions were idyllic for golf with just a gentle breeze during the day helping to keep the competitors cool. After the thunderstorm and flash flooding just 2 days ago, the course was in remarkable condition and the greens looked magnificent.

The game finished at the 15th hole with Linda winning the match 5&3.

This was Linda's 16th time of winning the Championship.

The Greenlees team headed to Williamwood Golf Club for their last away fixture of this season.

Despite the torrential rain and thunderstorms yesterday, the course was in amazing shape. Again the tempature rose in the afternoon and once again, it became very hot and sunny - perfect for golf.

Alas the result was not quite as good as the weather.

The final result Williamwood 9 - Greenock 0.

Today we hosted the Megawatt Competition at Greenock. This is an annual competition between Gourock, Greenock and Kilmacolm golf clubs and is a Stableford format. The morning started cloudy and it felt a little chilly as the teams teed off at 10.30am. However, by the afternoon the sun had burnt off the cloud and once again the glorious sunshine and heat of this summer continued.

For the first time since 2007, Greenock won the competition. The team consisted of Helen Armstrong, Dorothy Fisher, and Sandra Macdougall (Captain).

    The overall results:

    1st: Greenock 98 points

    2nd Kilmacolm 92 points

In soaring temperatures - today the mercury reached 26C /  82F - the Greenlees team travelled to Hilton Park and played their match on the Allander course. Both teams found the heat very challenging - but everyone enjoyed their matches on what proved to be a very tricky course, where strategic placing of the ball was required at most holes.

Greenock were beaten 9 - 0 but all agreed that their matches were played in a very friendly spirit and in two cases the games went right down to the last putt on the eighteenth green.

    Tuesday, 9th July 2013

Today our Mail on Sunday team played their 6th round match at home against Loudoun Gowf.

Sunshine shone on the course once again, and with no rain in the last week there was plenty of run. Overall the match was very tight, but Greenock just scraped a win.

The final result Greenock 3 - Loudoun Gowf 2.

Greenock now move into the 7th round and are one of only 6 teams left in the competition in Scotland.

    Saturday, 6th July 2013

Yesterday we held our annual Captain's Flag Day competition. Kerri McGill our Captain entertained several of the lady members for a delightful afternoon tea - ginger torte, chocolate cake, and shortbread were several of the culinary delights on offer.

26 Ladies took part in the Flag Day competition. Despite overcast skies early on, a strong wind blew the clouds away and let the sun shine in during the afternoon.

The winner was Liz McConnachie who took the Flag to just before the the 18th green. Anne Sweeney was the runner up half way down the 18th fairway.

Several of the 9 hole members took part in competition over the 9 hole course. Elaine Hunter ran out the overall winner with 12 points. Joanne Wallace was the winner of the competition for the members without a handicap.

Receiving the cheque on behalf of the Skylark Unit is Gillian Ferguson (paediatric physiotherapist) and paediatricians Anju Jose and Caroline Clark.

The money was raised by ladies of Greenock Golf Club at their recent Open Day held on 2nd June, when 56 ladies took part in the annual greensome stableford.

The centre is where children and young people aged 0-19 years, who require professional health assessment and care for developmental problems can be seen. The money will be put to good use in its forthcoming refurbishment.

    Friday, 28th June 2013

Despite a dreich and blustery morning, the skies brightened a little before 1pm just in time for the start of the home Greenlees match against Cawder Golf Club. Weather forecasts indicated an improving afternoon, and so it was to be ....eventually. Rain in the morning had dampened the fairways somewhat but the course was still looking in great shape.

On a lighter note, a rogue trolley made a bid for freedom on the 9th hole, but it was apprehended soon after by its owner who sprinted very impressively down the course.

The final score was Greenock 8 - Cawder 1

The Greenlees team headed south today down the M77 to East Renfrewshire Golf Club to play their next Greenless match.

Sunshine and heat was in abundance all day, and with a very slight breeze, the dreaded midges thankfully were kept well out of sight. The surrounding countryside offerred many many lovely views of Lanarkshire and beyond. With plenty of interesting holes and many undulating fairways, it was a very enjoyable day of golf.

Tonight we played our second WRGL league match of the season with a home tie against Erskine Golf Club.

Despite pessimistic forecasts of wind and rain, the skies stayed bright and the sun shone as the games teed off at 5.30pm. The most testing conditions were were the strong winds which increased in strength as the players approached the 6th and 7th holes, the highest holes on the course.. Latterly the clouds darkened and the rain started to fall on in the inward 9 holes. Unfortunately the Greenock team lost the match.

Looking down the 6th fairway today at Greenock Ladies Open Day

On a gloriously sunny Sunday, 56 Ladies took to the fairways at Greenock for our annual Ladies Open Day.

The format was a Greensome Stableford competition. On a perfect day for golf, a gentle breeze kept the players cool on the course. Fairways and greens were looking magnificent and with the recent dry weather of the last week, it was a delight to see the ball bound down the fairways once again.

The overall winners were Helen Armstrong and Rosetta Quinn both from Greenock who scored a very impressive 41 points. Well done Helen and Rosetta.

Our raffle today raised a grand sum of £357 and this will be donated to The Skylark Children's Unit at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Greenock.

Our Greenlees fixtures continued today with a home game against Lanark Golf Club.

Although the morning was dry, the weather forecast promised rain by 2pm.....it duly arrived on time. Heavy bursts of rain at first then sporadic outbursts of rain all afternoon. Waterproofs were on and off, on and off all afternoon. However, unlike previous weeks it was never cold, and it became very humid and still out on the course.

The final result was Greenock 7 - Lanark 2.

Despite a short shower just before tee off, the sun soon reappeared and stayed out all afternoon for the matches. By mid afternoon it had become pleasantly warm, and with just a little breeze, the conditions were idyllic for golf.

In a closely fought match, Greenock just managed to win the tie.

In what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far, temperatures reached 22C making the conditions perfect for golf. A pleasant breeze got up in the afternoon and helped to keep the players cool on the fairways. Delightful views of Glasgow and the surrounding Campsie hills could be seen from the higher parts of the course.

Despite the wonderful weather, the overall result was not so good as Greenock lost the match.

Spring had still not sprung for today's 4th round match in the Mail on Sunday competition. The match was a home tie against Old Ranfurly Golf Club.

The already saturated fairways were tested again with steady rain falling as the first game teed off. Despite the never ending rain of the last week, the greens held up well with all the holes free of water.. Breezy conditions up on the highest parts of the course added to the interesting and testing conditions for both teams.

The Greenock team consisting of Linda McDougall, Mo Neilson, Dorothy Fisher, Sandra Macdougall and Liz McConnachie came out on top.

The final score was Greenock 4 - Old Ranfurly 1.

Today we had our first Greenlees game of the 2013 season with a home match against Eastwood Golf Club.

Despite a terrible weather forecast, the morning dawned dry with just light, patchy rain. However, as the 1pm tee off approached, the clouds darkened, the wind got up and the rain set in.

Both teams teed off but soon the course was becoming more akin to swimming than golf. By the time the first game reached the 5th green, conditions had detoriated rapidly with the fairways starting to flood. Soon the 5th hole was full of water. Despite valiant attempts to clear the hole, the water soon filled up again. To the great relief of all, the decision was taken to abandon the match due to the course being unplayable.

Everyone trooped off the course, and wet waterproofs were hastily removed. All the players soon warmed up in the warmth of the clubhouse. All enjoyed a delicious cup of coffee or tea and delicious cakes.

A new date has now been set and the match will now be replayed on Friday, 16th August.

We can only hope that summer will have arrived by then !!!

On Wednesday night 45 ladies attended our Golf Fashion and Quiz Night at the Golf Club.

At the start of the evening we had a selection of Ladies Golf clothing from Kevin in the shop and also from a representative from PING.

Then later in the evening we held the Quiz night. With questions ranging from amongst other subjects, general knowledge, music, art & literature and local knowledge, it was a very enjoyable evening. As always, the questions were only easy if you knew the answers. Much hilarity and debating could be heard throughout the evening.

The victorious team were Helen Armstrong, Janice Avis, Celia Fleming, Jessie McKillop. Well done ladies.

Today the Ladies Mail on Sunday team played the next round in the competition. This 3rd round match was a home tie against Ranfurly Castle.

Certainly it felt more like Spring with the sun feeling pleasantly warm and with the last few weeks of dry weather, there was plenty of run on the course.

Playing for the team in this round were Linda McDougall, Mo Neilson, Dorothy Fisher, Kerri McGill and Liz McConnachie.

The result was a victory for Greenock with the final score Greenock 4 - Ranfurly Castle 1.

Mae McLaughlin and Kerri McGill teed off just after 9.30am today in the first Ladies competitive fixture of the 2013 season, a 14 Hole Stableford.

6 players took to the fairways and after last Thursday's washout, the weather today was somewhat kinder. With light and patchy rain during the morning, and feeling milder than of late, the playing conditions were not too bad, but by the afternoon the rain had become heavier.

    The overall result was:-

    1st: Linda McDougall - 26 points

    2nd: Sandra Macdougall - 25 points

A dreich and cold day today meant nobody ventured out onto the course for the 14 Hole Stableford - the first Ladies competition of the 2013 golfing season.

Let's hope next Thursday's Stableford competition goes ahead in sunnier and warmer conditions.

    Sunday, 3rd March 2013

Having received a bye in the first round, the Mail on Sunday team today played their 2nd round tie at home against the team from Skelmorlie Golf Club.

It was a perfect day for golf with little wind and as there had been no rain in the last couple of weeks, the course looked in very good shape. The Greenock team consisted of Linda McDougall, Mo Neilson, Dorothy Fisher, Sandra Macdougall and Liz McConnachie.

Greenock won the match with the final score Greenock 4 - Skelmorlie 1.
