Last night the 2012 Ladies Section Annual Prizegivng & Dinner was held at the Golf Club.

At the start of the evening, our Captain, Kerri McGill presented Cathy Harvey from the bar with a gift from the Ladies Section. Cathy was retiring after being our Bar Manageress at the Club for 28 years and yesterday was her last day at work. We wish Cathy a very happy retirement.

The 34 ladies who attended the prizegiving enjoyed a delightful evening. After the meal, the prizes were presented and it was wonderful to celebrate all the individual's successes from throughout the season.

Well done to all the winners and congratulations to everyone who took part in the competitions.

Yesterday the 34th Annual Charity Tri-Am took place at the Golf Club. Despite blustery showers in the morning, the afternoon dried up and the competitors made it round the course dry if not a little bedraggled by the strong winds.

The Ladies Section had 4 players taking part - Dorothy Fisher, Sandra MacDougall, Linda McDougall and Mo Neilson. The visitors playing were Sara Burns, Clare Hargan, Donna Jackson, Liz Stewart & Carol Whyte

The annual Captain v Secretary match was another casualty yesterday of the disappointing summer with strong winds and rain causing the match to be cancelled. However, the weather could not dampen the spirits in the evening as all the competitors in the match met at the Golf Club and enjoyed a delicious meal.

Our final Greenlees match of the season was a home tie against Williamwood.

Despite a gloomy weather forecast, the afternoon was and sunny and humid. Strong winds blew across the course mid afternoon, making the "loop" particularly challenging. Eventually the rain arrived late afternoon. The views across the river were outstanding and the players were treated to the sight of the 2 big cruise liners berthed at Greenock's Ocean Terminal - Aida Cara and Ocean Princess.

The final score was Greenock 2.5 - Williamwood 6.5.

Today was Finals Day, and the Ladies Final this year was between Linda McDougall and Sandra MacDougall.

The disappointing summer weather continued with heavy showers on and off all afternoon making the course extremely wet. Several greens were soon flooded and the greenkeeping staff (with the help of our Felicity) managed to keep the greens playable.

The game finished at the 15th Hole with Linda winning by 4 & 3 and thereby winning the Championship for a 15th time.

The Greenlees team were in action again today with a home match against East Renfrewshire. Despite a pessimistic weather forecast, the afternoon was very pleasant - dry and warm, with a gentle breeze keeping the midges away.

Unfortunately, Greenock lost the match with the final score Greenock 2 - East Renfrewshire 7. Despite it being very wet underfoot due to the incessant rain over the last few days, the course held up well and the greens were true.

Our annual Captain's Flag Day was held yesterday. In the afternoon, our Captain, Kerri McGill entertained several of the lady members for a delightful afternoon tea - meringues, shortbread, lemon drizzle cakes were several of the culinary delights on offer. Back on the fairways, 26 Ladies took part in the Flag Day competition. Despite heavy rain during the week, the afternoon was a perfect day for golf - calm and humid conditions overhead.

The winner was Margaret Austin who took the Flag to the 17th hole with Linda McDougall the runner up just off the back of the 17th green.

Several of the 9 hole members took part in competition over the 9 hole course, and Jennie Ferdinand ran out the overall winner in the 9 hole competition with a net score of 53.

Last Sunday, 2 ladies teams took part in an enjoyable round of golf in the Pro's Day at Greenock Golf Club.

In the morning the team of Cath Forbes, Fiona Cook, Rosetta Quinn and Kerri McGill played through the rain for 5 holes, but the weather soon dried up. Cath won the nearest the pin for the Ladies on the third hole.On the 16th hole, 3 out of the 4 Ladies beat the Pro - the ladies tee shots were inside Kevin's shot which had landed in the rough.

The other ladies team played in the afternoon and consisted of Helen Armstrong, Felicity Bryant, Morag Connelly and Moira McInnes. Their overall score of 77 was the best of the Ladies teams, but alas, they failed to beat Kevin at the 16th hole this time - his shot was just a few feet from the pin.

All the Ladies thoroughly enjoyed their day.

The Greenlees match away at Cawder today was played with amber weather warnings forecast - but both teams were delighted to have dry conditions overhead - although it was extremely wet conditions underfoot ( the course had been closed the day before due to flooding).

Cawder won 7 - 2. and over tea both teams switched their focus from golf to watch Andy Murray's Wimbledon progress. The party was then extended to refreshments at team captain Dorothy's home and Greenock look forward to returning the hospitality next year.

Our Greenlees team were in action again today with a home match again Cowglen. The air was very humid and a gentle breeze kept the midges mostly at bay - playing conditions were really very pleasant for golf. Intermittent rain showers came and went all afternoon but only later did the rain become really heavy with some heavy downpours for the later games. The greens were looking lovely.

Greenock won the match with the final score, Greenock 7.5 - Cowglen 1.5

Although Midsummer's Day is next week, Summer felt a long way away today for our first home Greenlees match of the season against Cathcart Castle. Despite it being a wet morning, the rain more or less cleared by the time the teams teed off this afternoon. A strong. cold blustery east wind meant the shorts were put away for another day and replaced with waterproofs and gloves. The greens were looking lovely despite the unseasonal conditions.

The overall result was a draw - Greenock 4.5 Cathcart Castle 4.5.

Last night, Kevin Campbell, our Professional, presented the Ladies Section with a rules and etiquette quiz which 21Ladies attended. Felicity our social convener arranged for a very tasty finger buffet to be served by Gary our chef and his staff. Kevin also brought along some clothes for the ladies to try on or order. Some of the clothes were from the next Ping collection.  We learned quite a bit from the quiz and had an enjoyable supper and we rounded the evening off with trying on some of the lovely golf clothing on display. An enjoyable time was had by all.

56 Ladies took to the fairways today to compete in our annual Ladies Open Day which this year was a Greensome Stableford. The early players had dry but overcast conditions and despite some light rain late morning, most players made it round dry. It became very humid and calm in the afternoon - ideal conditions for golf. In the late afternoon dark clouds appeared up river over Port Glasgow. Slowly the clouds moved down the river and with the skies darkening, heavy rain soon fell to catch the later games.

The overall winners were Elspeth Hanlon (Gourock) and Anne Terrey (Greenock) who scored a very commendable 39 points - well done Elspeth and Anne.

Our raffle today raised a grand sum of £360 and this will be donated to Inverclyde Voluntary Council of Social Services.

Many thanks to all the players and sponsors who helped to make today such a success.

The rains came at the start of the match and continued for most of the afternoon making the fairways and greens extremely wet. Despite a very brief appearance from the sun, the rains soon returned, and by the end of the match, all the players were as wet as the course. At the end of the match everyone was glad to get indoors and enjoy a delicious buffet meal.

Today was the official start of the golfing season for the Ladies with our first competition - a 14 Hole Stableford. Despite rather breezy and damp conditions, 6 Ladies took to the fairways and braved the elements.

As conditions both overhead and underfoot were very wet, only 1 person returned a score, so Linda McDougall was our winner with 24 points.

Well done to everyone who took part - hopefully the weather and conditions will improve as the season goes on.

Last night 56 Ladies and Guests attended our annual Cheese & Wine Evening at the Golf Club.

The evening was a resounding success with a delightful array of dips, biscuits, cheese, sausage rolls, vegatables and fruits on offer - not forgetting the wine of course.

Various quizzes ran throughout the evening, and prizes were handed out to all the winning tables. The raffle proved very popular, and many people won prizes.

Lots ot chatter ensured, and everyone found it was a great opportunity to fx up fixtures for the new season.

All in all, a very enjoyable night. Pictures from the evening will follow shortly

Well done to Liz McConnachie and her golfing partner John McGovern who played and won their Mixed tie at Greenock Golf Club last Sunday. This meant that they won the Scottish regional final of the National Mixed Matchplay Championship which is held throughout the UK.

Liz and John now play the UK North regional final on 3rd April at Forest of Arden. The format is a 4 ball better ball stableford and altogether 7 qualifiers from all over the UK will be playing with the top 2 teams going to the Final in Dubai in May.

We wish Liz and John well in their forthcoming match.

Today our Ladies team played in the Mail on Sunday competition. Having received a bye in the first round, today was our second round match with an away fixture at Kilmacolm.

Despite it just being a few degrees above freezing, conditions were really very pleasant for golf with the sun shining mostly all day. Everyone was well wrapped up against the elements with plenty of layers of clothing and woolly hats in abundance.

Unfortunately the Greenock team were beaten in the match with the final score Kilmacolm 4.5 - Greenock 0.5.
