Covid 19 Phase 3 Lockdown - Update

In line with the Scottish Government’s statement today on the move to Phase 3 of the lockdown restrictions being lifted the following changes will occur at Greenock Golf Club :

1) As from tomorrow Friday 10th of July 4 balls will be allowed on non competition days
NB Competitions will remain as 3 balls maximum

2) Anyone having a drink after their round in the outdoor space or marquee can be in groups of 5 different households now as long as socially distant from each other

3) On Wednesday 15th July it is intended that the Bar will reopen again indoors and a plan is currently being worked up on how we will do that whilst meeting guidelines and regulations . More info on this will be issued when finalised.

4) It is hoped to also open the kitchen again to coincide with the reopening of the lounges - again this will be communicated when finalised

5) Lastly the locker room reopening will be communicated once we have guidelines from Scottish Golf in the next few days .

We are now beginning to see things open up again but it is important to remember we still have some way to go so all members are respectively asked to follow all guidelines and support our Staff whilst they do their jobs in the new environment

Bunker Rakes

Members are advised that from Wednesday 8th July, 2020, rakes will be available at the shop.
We would ask that each game takes one rake out with their game, not just on competition days, but on every round that they play.
As we are still under Covid restrictions we'd ask that each game nominates a player as "Mr Raker" to minimise the need for sanitizing/handling which can be dealt with upon completion of the round.

S Cameron and D Shields have been doing a sterling job in volunteering to rake the bunkers for us ,and their efforts are very much appreciated. But this new arrangement will allow us all the opportunity to help keep the bunkers in the best possible condition for those unfortunate enough to visit them during their round. "

Covid - 19. Phase II Scotland.

The Scottish Government today announced it's intention to move to Phase II on June 18 if the virus continues on its downward trend

The significant changes in Phase II affecting the Golf Club relate to the conditions under which Pubs;Clubs and Restaurants will be allowed to reopen outdoor spaces only whilst maintaining physical distancing with increased hygiene measures. Changes to conditions for family and friends to socialise are also likely to be revised in Phase II.

In anticipation of these changes, the Executive Committee is now actively engaged in understanding the detail implications of these changes and where practicable, putting the appropriate actions in place to allow members to enjoy the Golf Club even more under the Phase II revisions.

We are all looking forward to taking one more step towards what we knew as normality. The Executive committee will keep members fully informed as and when we have completed preparations and are able to implement the relevant Phase II changes in a timely manner.

Continuation of Lockdown

All members and players to note.

We are sure that you will all be aware that the First Minister announced today that lockdown measures will continue for another 3 weeks minimum with the next review due to take place on the 28 May.

We will all be disappointed that we are unable to reopen and start playing golf as yet but clearly the greater need remains the health and welfare of the country.

Please be assured that your committees are continuing to monitor and make preparations for any relaxation of the lockdown and decisions that golf can resume. This has included the return to work in the last few weeks of the green staff to carry out essential maintenance of the courses, work on implementing the new VMS software and consideration of the conditions that we will need to be in place for that go ahead when it comes. These might include for example the on-course measures we announced just prior to lockdown, increasing time between games and limiting the number of players in each group, but we await further guidelines from the UK & Scottish government, R&A and SGU to understand exactly what these are. We are making what preparations we can in the meantime on reasonable assumptions so we can minimise the time it will take from the announcement to get the course and environs ready for us all to get back to playing.

We will circulate further guidance on these ‘safe’ golf measures and timings for the resumption of golf in due course.

In the meantime, we will all just need to be patient, remain safe and follow the guidance while our courses remain closed. It is disappointing and frustrating for the vast majority of us when we hear that people are playing on our course, members or not, but we can only stress the need for all members to stick together, not to golf and risk the reputation of the golf club as well as the more important matter of all our health, until we hear better news.

  • 20 April 2020

As we continue to monitor the Covid -19 pandemic and the social distancing measures, the Executive committee have reviewed our course maintenance status.

It has been decided that, in the interests of keeping the courses in a manageable condition as we go through this crisis, we allow the green staff to return to work.

This will take place Monday, 20th April,2020. The Green staff will be required to comply with the following SGU recommended guidelines on work practices :-
- Focus on hygiene and social distancing
- Ensure staff members work separately
- Allocate individual machinery to one worker only
- If multiple staff on site, then stagger working hours and break times
- Limit or prohibit use of communal areas
- Regularly disinfect any surface that is contacted e.g. door handles, fuel pumps, communal machinery
- Ensure there is a robust lone working policy

Members are advised that this action is being taken solely for the purpose of ensuring our courses are kept in a reasonable condition and to also minimise the preparation time required to make ready the courses for play as and when Social distancing measures are relaxed.

We would ask members to please note that the courses are still CLOSED for play and practice at this time and members are kindly asked to respect this position. Whilst our courses are designated as open space for walking, playing Golf is not permitted under current restrictions.

We will of course continue to keep you informed as the situation progresses and we thank you for your continued support and patience.

  • Golf Course and Clubhouse Facilities Closure
  • In its latest measures to contain the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), the UK Government has announced that everyone must now stay at home except in exceptional circumstances.

  • The new measures announced state that you may only leave home:
    - to go to work (if you are a key worker)
    - to infrequently shop for groceries, medicine and other essentials
    - to exercise outside once a day on your own or with family
    - to provide care or help a vulnerable person for any medical need

  • Consequently,it is with much regret that the Executive Committee have taken the decision to inform members that, effective immediately, our golf courses and all clubhouse premises will be closed to all members and visitors until further notice.

  • We will be working with all staff ongoing in order to deal with and clarify the consequences of this decision.

  • We will of course continue to keep members fully informed as this situation evolves.
Meanwhile,we thank you for your continued support and understanding at this time.

  • 17 March 2020

The Executive Committee met this morning to consider the implications for the Golf Club and its members resulting from yesterdays revised guidance from Government.

As a result, the Executive Committee has determined that, in the best interests of the membership and staff, the clubhouse facilities will be closed effectively immediately. This means that all lounge areas, bar and restaurant facilities will not be available for general use for the foreseeable future.

However, in recognition of the impact this virus will have on our social activities, the Executive Committee is anxious to ensure that the Golf courses remain available to members. To that end, we will keep the locker room and toilet facilities open (excluding shower room). This arrangement will of course be subject to review as the situation evolves.

It is our strong desire that playing golf at Greenock GC should continue if at all possible, including competitions. And to that end, more information will be forthcoming in the next few days regarding competition entry and administration process. Indeed, playing golf may be the only social activity we can safely take part in over the next few months so this will be our main focus while it is still appropriate.

The Executive Committee fully appreciate the inconvenience these decisions may cause, but we would ask you to recognise that they have been taken with the prime objective of acting in the best interests of the membership and staff.

We will of course be monitoring the situation as it develops, and it is very likely that we will need to make further difficult decisions affecting the use and management of the Golf Club in the weeks and months to come.Any such changes will of course be communicated to the membership as and when necessary. We would ask for the members support and understanding during this challenging time for everyone.

Thank you,

Executive Committee
